Projects Road to Redemption: 49 Chevy Coupe Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by deto, Sep 11, 2014.

  1. Gravity helps too. You can crib up a floor jack as well, done that one.

  2. That's a pretty nifty idea.
I would make some of them, but my car is lowered and my belly is bigger.:D

Door opening braced for door removal and rocker repair. I welded these in from inside with the door shut to keep it as square as possible

Looking forward to seeing how you go about this. Please take pictures of the process. The rockers are my next project after buttoning up the quarter panels.

Please turn your cribbing 90* so that the top 2 x 4s capture the tires to keep everything from possibly rolling back or forth. Also, keep up the good work.

1/2/16: As Emily Litella said "Never mind". The picture(s) below this show how you are addressing that. Sorry.

Got the outer rocker welded up. Just have to work on the transition at the front where the fender bolts up.

It's amazing what I've missed in the last few days. That looks great. My rockers are gone as well, and I'm planning on hitting those after the floor. Keep taking its of your progress, I'm sure I'll be using this as a guide.

From what the EMS guy said in the Chevytalk sticky, you should do the floors very last as they basically lock in all the gaps etc. supposedly you do the rockers first and get the gaps straight then finish with the floor. There's some good info in that sticky, definitely worth the read.

Floors and toe board tacked in. I fit the replacement panels over the existing floor and cut through them both so my fit is good. I also screw the panels down first so they don't move when cutting. The cut off wheels measure .040" so it leaves a good gap for welding.

Nice. It feels good when all those rust holes start disappearing doesn't it?

I had to show my wife the photo of your Chihuahua sitting on the stool; it looks just like hers, only hers has longer ears. This will be fun, rust be damned! I always look forward to you "installments". I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Well, I've had a lot of practice. But in any case, whats important is having the drive. If you have drive, then skill follows. It looks like you have drive. Thanks for the compliment.

By the way, I addressed your question in my '54 thread.

Thanks man. Yes I saw that. I'm getting pics together of the problem areas. Some of them are under the belt line trim so I need to pop it off to show you...

So here's where I'm at... had my wife back my joints with a welding spoon while I welded. It helped alot. Next I decided to tackle the end of the rocker, so i mounted the door and noticed that the rocker sits slightly proud of the door skin. I'm bummed the rocker has a bow to it, especially since it was plug welded. Oh well. Gonna cut the top face of the rocker and push it in and tack it.

@cretin am I gonna screw things up further by cutting the rocker?

  30. I'm not exactly sure I understand where you think you are going to cut it. I'm thinking a slice with a cut off wheel along the top inside the jamb in front of where the sill plate would be just about right.
