I know a Volvo 240 differential is offset, replaced a few, most designs of differentials with spider gears and a limited slip carrier would require an offset housing, there are a few exception like the Ford banjo set-up but they are extremely weak and Fred is planning some high horsepower requiring strength and we know from history his cars are daily drivers.

  2. Easy answer - run a quickchange! The champs will handle tons of torque and are most commonly centered (I have seen a few offset for some specialized roundy-round and short-track stuff but they're rare and you'd most likely be refitting axles and tubes anyhow so could build it centered). Even a V8 will handle more than the average T bucket needs for power.
Yes, it will cost more but the bang-for-your-buck quotient is off the charts.
Plus no one can argue that adding a qc isn't a substantial step toward deuglification! :D

Actually, my perch is set at 5 degrees, but there's no way you could spot that in the pics.

Nope, I'll just keep my updates in my album and on a T Bucket site that I frequent. My build is FAR from traditional, in fact, it'll be SLIGHTLY traditional themed. It's just gonna be a damn hot rod, and I'm not going to change my vision to fit this thread or the HAMB.

Now, enough of that and back to whatever is going on this week.

Last night, I did some deep thinking, well for me it was pretty deep. I think, if a non-centered pumpkin seems like it'll bug me that much, I'll just go back with an S-10, like I did before. Maybe run it while a save up for something better looking and stronger. Anyone, who kept up with my previous build, will notice that I'm constantly changing stuff around. This build will be no different.

But honestly, the more I think about drive shaft alignment and a 12" drive shaft, the 2" offset on an 8.8" rear won't bug me, after I get used to it. I'd rather have that short drive shaft straight. Will it please other people? Seriously don't care. Will it be ugly? Eye of the beholder crap.

Who knows, maybe my income tax refund will be bigger than expected and that will change everything.........again.:D

Sorry again Fred and guys. Sometimes I just can't help myself when I see something like this. And really guys I wouldn't quote this if the owner hadn't said he didn't like it either.

I wasn't refering to the angle Fred, but the height of the perch, mine is higher using a semi stock axle., it's going to be a driven hot rod too. [IMG]

Yeah Gary I raised mine too when I decided to put the spring on top of a stock axle.

Well, I'm going with a spring behind, 4" dropped axle. Why would I need a perch that high?o_O And how would front spring perch height even effect rear end choices?

Gary, I don't think RPU was the owner. He said he feel in love with the car, until he saw the rear end. Maybe he'll clarify. But, in my opinion, the angle that pic was taken and the rear spring, exaggerates the offset.

2" isn't that much, unless you're dating that bow legged girl down the street.

No effect on the rear end, I'm using an old axle I had laying around from a LSR car so I needed a deeper drop, [IMG]

  12. You re right Fred, that's not my T modified, but the shot is near on the cars centre line and the offset would only be exaggerate by a half inch at the most.
Now, you say you building a Hot Rod and thats good by me, its not a Street Rod but a Hot Rod, and carrying on from your last build this one will be cool, build on Sir.:D JW

Here's a question for the gallery. Has anyone used a centered 9" on a T Bucket and were there issues with the offset pinion and a short drive shaft? I think an answer to that question would clear a few things up.

  14. If the drive shaft is angled up or down and also is off to one side, it still has only one angle at each joint. JW

Fred, as long as the driveshaft is phased properly angle wise, an offset pinion should not make a huge difference as long as the offset angles are not extreme.
Of course the correct phasing and output (trans and pinion angles are required.)
    This is a good video.

You know Fred we all have our own goals in our builds. Granted my goal was maybe 90 percent looks and using as many old parts as I could find. I just wanted to achieve "the look" of the Grabowski or Ivo cars. I never raced or wanted to race. I hate to break stuff so the banjo is fine for mine out back. Build your rod the way you want and fuck what we/I say.

If you are using a spring behind and a dropped axle your front spring perch is fine. These things don't need to be too low in front anyway.

As far as a 12 " drive shaft I think it will take up pretty much any angle you put it in within reason. When I first built my roadster with the Mustang engine and tranny all I had room for is two U joints welded together. Yes no length. Pretty much as I have at my age. And it worked just fine. A lot of boats are that way. Buckets with an A or T rear spring don't move much anyway.

I am, Gary. I'm just looking at options and gathering info to make a logical and reliable choice. I went through this with my other T Bucket. This is my second build, which is nothing compared to you guys, so I ask questions regarding what will and won't work. That's all I'm trying to do.

I'm not looking for a pissing contest, I'm looking for info and perhaps an answer to some of my questions will benefit other people, who are lurking or just as curious as I am.

Fred in my own maybe blunt way I'm trying to help and what I said before stands. For a rod with the diff. so exposed I can't believe there aren't plenty of centered punkin choices. If your going to primary race it throw all that out and get the strongest one that has the gear choices you need.

    Fred,

I centered the 9" housing on my T. The offset in lateral location of the pinion is only 15/16". So, as others have mentioned, make sure you get your pinion angles right and you should be fine. You can do a trigonometry calculation to figure out your u joint angles. 3.5* is the maximum recommended, but that is assuming your u joints will live 100,000 miles. I've been told, and have read about, that you can exceed that angle by a bit and still be ok.

Remember when you calculate the angle to have your yoke pulled out of the trans some (i.e. at operating location) and measure from joint to joint. That is the hypoteneuse of your triangle. 15/16" (or 0.9375") is your short side, so you will have to compute this:

    sin(x) = (0.9375/hypoteneuse)

    So...

    x = arcsin (0.9375/hypoteneuse)

    or...

    x = sin^(-1)(0.9375/hypoteneuse)

Which is the same thing, but a different way of saying it. The letter x is your angle. If you had 12" from u joint to u joint centers, your angle is approximately 4.5*, which I would argue that wouldn't cause any issues whatsoever.

Here's a picture I pulled off the web:

When you have an up/down angle and a side/side angle, they effectively add up to a bigger angle.

You have to take that into account.

Good opinions and ideas. So, until a Winters appears at my door, I'll just go with what worked before. A S-10 rear end. Fairly easy to find, in my area and most around here are 3:73.

And a Winters WILL appear, it'll just take a few moves and a couple of years, but I've got all the time in the world.

Now, how about some classic HAMB and cheese?

My hair is alot greyer, now, and I weigh a bit more....you are a tease, though. If any of the other thread regulars want to guess, it shouldn`t be too hard to get who, where and even what.....
