Thanks for all the logging pics. My grandfather worked in the Yosemite/Shaver Lake areas before the war. He ran a donkey engine but before that he was loading trucks and rail cars.

One time he was up on either a truck or rail car unhooking the logs and as they were setting a log, one of the chains broke. My grandfather "almost" got all the way out of its way. Had his leg trapped and it crushed his knee. The saw bones patched him up and they loaded him into his 37 Chevy coupe. My grandmother drove him about 60 miles down logging roads to the hospital. I think he was in the hospital 3-4 months.

That same 37 Chevy is in my storage unit awaiting it's turn.

Wow… I bet those Engineers that made the transition from steam to diesel, sure didn't miss having to look down that jaw dropping length of boiler tube in front of you just to see glimpses of the immediate track which lay ahead of you. Also, just think of how your neck would feel after a session of leaning out of the side window to see ? Would be kinda like driving down the highway all the way with your head out the window. Have done that on frozen roads in a car but just saying.

A little Story: A buddy and I when we were around 12 years old were down by the tracks on summer day in my home town and we came upon this very same type of diesel engine just sitting on the tracks and idling. We hung around it long enough to discover no one was aboard. So I got dared to climb up aboard it and did so. Wow what an experience. That thing had a low power vibration you could feel up through your feet to your inner soul and I mean soul not soles. My friend followed me in and we explored the massive cockpit area and climbed into the large leather Engineer's seats all the while looking out the windshield which afforded an excellent almost 180 degree forward point of view that seemed to be like mile above the ground. Walking back from the front windshield cockpit and it's almost surprisingly simple uncluttered dash, we soon discovered this long rumbaing area is where the engine(s) were located. One big long massive engine area. You could walk all the way to the rear of the engine car, go around and then come back forward on the other side. Everything was huge as well. You could just feel the power as that engine as it sat idling. We then got scarred as hell and climbed back out before anyone discovered we had been in there. Thinking back on that little adventure, I did sit in the Engineer's seat and put my hand on the large bar next to his seat that looked like a tiller boat wheel. Maybe we could of went for a joy ride if we had more ca-who'nas. Wow like I said, if we had gotten caught on & in that engine, I have no idea what would of happened. We used to do crap like that all the time back in the day whenever the opportunity afforded itself …. :')

Look at the red painted exhaust manifolds. Did they all come painted then the paint burns off?

Years ago I drove an old Chevy with the same color scheme. People kept trying to hail me down - thought I was driving a taxi! :D

One of my old neighbors once told me how he did this same kind of conversion back in the 60's.

Don't worry sweet thing, lets go back to my place and call triple A., maybe have a drink or two or three and get to know each other. I know, that bullshit line didn't work back then either!

Cool but if that is the case one would think the heads would show some evidence of the manifolds burning or burn there themselves.
