What was the question, oh ya I remember.
I built this engine before starting my car, because if I ran out of money before it was finished I wouldn't end up settling for a small block Chevy.
I still ran out of money.

I would rather see a small block Chevy in a rod, than a non performing never used " back in the day" engine

Were these HAMB only shows? SO WHAT if they have a black crate 350/350 or a junkyard LS with an Edelbrock intake/carb like everybody else. What if they only care that the car is reliable and don't give a flip about the "HAMB traditional heresy inquisition squad"? Are you the self appointed "Inquisitor General of lame power plants"? If so please provide the Holy Scriptures defining a lame power plant.

No motor can be as "lame" as beating this horse to death again.

Sorry Boys , but I tend to agree with the OP . I have seen soooo many really cool rods and customs that would have been 10 steps above , had they picked an interesting powerplant . They build a bad ass ride (or spend a TON having a shop build it) , then pick the cheapest , most bland 'plant available to drag an otherwise perfect build down the tubes . I understand the whole theory that you "just had it lying around" - nothing wrong with that . But does every other damn rod need a 350/350 with an Edelbrock carb sitting on an Edelbrock intake with the same ho-hum valve covers ? Nope . An old 265 , 283 or a 327 with some cool carbs and vintage valve covers with some rams horns ... that's cool beans , IMHO . I might not have the most interesting powerplant in my Shoebox , it's just a 302 . Guess what - it had a SBC in it when I looked at it ! I told him I had no interest in that whatsoever . I wanted to do something at least a BIT different . My 302 is dressed with a vintage Torker "Tarantula" intake with a small vintage Holley and vintage Cal Custom valve covers . The best I could do for now , but it's still not a belly button SBC . I'll say one more thing - I have gotten a TON of compliments about running a Ford in my Ford , and that isn't just a line . People DO notice when you take the time to do something at least A BIT different . I wish I could put together a bad ass flatty with a blower or something to go in my Shoe ... maybe someday . I want to keep this 302 in there at least till after my Route 66 trip . Then I'll put together a flathead or something "interesting" . There is CERTAINLY no shortage of cool powerplant ideas here on the HAMB . Maybe if I sell a kidney or something , I can make one happen for me ;) .

    Flame away , boys ... it's just my lame opinion :) .

The SBC may be considered lame but in my book anything that is cheap to build and operate just makes sense. My current 400 makes more power than most would consider necessary, it's reliable as a sunrise and if it should break down on a road trip I can get parts anywhere and make it home. Show engines are pretty and draw the ooows and ahhhs but I drive mine hard.

I could be wrong, but that sure looks like the typical "lame sbc" in that sedan of yours, but hey, at least you have super rad zoomies, a chick on the wheel, and the obligatory middle finger.
My lame sbc is a 265, because it's 1960 and my neighbor just totaled his 56 210 and gave me the running gear.

It's been posted around here before but here it is again. My father-in-laws flathead powered 30 Chevy. A flip on the old Chevy in a Ford.

BTW, the OP didn't say SBC's were lame, just the same ol billet bejeweled 350/350's. Plenty of super bitchin' belly buttons out there.

It's funny, when people on here see a borring, lame 350 pulled from a 1980 s corvette with HEI and all, everybody are fast to judge and point one finger, some time wave with the longest finger in the set.
But the moment that a guy names them lame 3-5-0, everybody stands up for there fellow rodder, and circle the wagons. LOL
There is nothing more ugly then an 350 with tall valve covered and rpm intake, and there is nothing more cool then a 327 with tri-power, early dual humps with a Mallory distributor.
Or a 301 with a mag and front block mount.
Its about the dress, and accessories, so does my wife tell me.

I don't have a 350, and I don't plan to run one, I don't mind some else run them. There is a reason everybody have one! But that ain't no reason to dress them pooly and ruin the look of a of era perfevt rod.

There are a lot of poorly executed cars at shows that people are very proud of, yep sbc's with Chinese chrome, bad wheel offsets, wrong tires for the rim, horrible stance. It makes the cars that are right stand out even more.

I walk thru, take a look and say nice car, to most, some I just have to keep walking.

I'll still build sbc's, I have a garage full of them, a lot of tree-fittys, 4 bolt with steel cranks. I hope I'm around long enough to scatter a few and rattle the bearings out of each one of them.

Mine. Not the greatest picture and taken a while ago. Looks more like a car with the fenders, rad and windows in. Just finishing the wiring.

Had a SBC when I started, just couldn't get enthused about using it. Saw a local ad for a 66 Riv and the blizzard wasn't to bad so went and checked it out and bought it. 80000 mile survivor.
