As far as filters, ditch the Fram. I wouldn't put one on anything. Wix or Baldwin are great. Napa Gold filters are repackaged Wix.
50wt oil is way to thick for that. I use 15-40 in everything for the zinc package.
Good luck on the repair. And the move.

FWIW, 72 degrees today in the Florida Pan Handle. Best beaches with no crowds, great fishing and sea food. Area is very conservative, lots of military retirees and none of the south Florida problems. Come on down.

Joe, I'd check the Zinc content in that Rotella, I believe it's been dramatically reduced as well

With 50 weight oil and cold weather, I bet your oil pressure was through the roof at start up. Get some 10W30 like everyone else runs and get rid of the Fram filter and I bet your oil leak will be gone.

My Son is an automotive engineer for a major automobile manufacturer.
They have done extensive testing on oil filters and the number 1 filter was a Purolator Pure One filter. As stated above Wix, Mobil 1, and Napa gold and silver which are relabeled Wix filters are all in the top quality list.

Purolator? That surprises me. I don't doubt it. It just surprises me. Are we talking about the same Purolator filters available at Wal-Mart?

Used to use AC Delco oil filters until they started making them in China by small children. Now use NAPA Gold.

I sure will 34roadster thanks for the heads up. My understanding was the synthetic Rotella was the one with the lowered zinc additive.

I to used to use AC filter's stopped for the same reason. I use Wix or Hasting's now depends on which is available I have used NAPA gold too. Joe

Huh.....I just checked the Delco filters I have on the shelf in my parts dept and all of them say 'Product of USA' or 'Made in USA' on the filter itself or the box. Huh.

  11. I have seen the same scenario when I lived in Nebraska.....

At the risk of hijacking the OPs thread here is some Oil Filter information some might like to read. I have to admit I was a little surprised as to what I learned. I attended an Oil & Oil Filter technical seminar back in the late 80s and BOY how things have changed! Check it out below if your so inclined. Joe

Thanks to low fuel prices, they now import the Chinese children instead of the product over to the USA to make the item here. So hold onto all those items marked Made in China, going up in value every day.

Looks like the thread got off track there. WHITEWALLS, did you start it up briefly and look to see where the oil is coming from? Should be easy to spot quickly with that much of a mess.

The best thing about our weather here in SoMo is as soon as you are done complaining about it, it has changed already so now you can start complaining about it again! I personally love our four distinct seasons, and especially enjoy having them all on the same day. Yesterday we were driving with our windows rolled down, and stopped for ice cream cones! Today I have the big coat out again. It's awesome.

Sounds like it's most likely the filter but I'm still curious, hopefully it warms up enough for you to give a **** and get to messing with it. I know this weathers got my "****s to give" count fairly low.

I'd check that valve cover for tightness while your at it, I lost a TON of oil from two lose covers and it shot it out straight into my inner fenders before it oiled the tollway

I use WIX filters cuz they kick ***... right?

This past sunday, I changed the oil in my daily driver '64 F100. Drained the oil, sealed it back up, spun on the new Wix and then filled it with oil. I then started it to let her warm up... Then, I looked down to see 6 quarts of oil all over my pristine shop floor.

The ring that holds the oil canister together had completely blown off and the filter was on the shop floor in pieces... Craziest **** I've ever seen. Took $15 in kitty litter to clean the spill up and a good hour of my time writing a ****ty and enraged email to WIX.

^^^I'd like to see Wix's response to that Ryan. Save the evidence, Wix may want a look. There might be a case of new filters in your future.
I switched to NAPA Gold after a Fram **** itself on start-up after an oil change, similar to your case.

Apologies to the OP, did ya find the leak?

if it was a chevy v8 i would check the timing chain cover. sometimes the chain would stretch with wear and cut a slit thru the cover.

that puddle is about 2 cups worth that would have been sprayed over the outside of the motor , oil spreads out thin , you should see what 5 gallons looks like on a shop floor , it covered a good 20x30' square area overnight

my last case from the dealer said hencho en mexico . never seen any china ones

  25. I'm defiantly going to run the 15wt-40 oil now, and no more FRAM filters. I always liked the orange filters, to me it meant quality, not any more, that was a long time ago. If I want an orange filter, I'll paint it.
I had every intention of working on it today after work, when I came home I spent some time with my wife, ate dinner, watched 2 house hunters with her, and that was it. The outside temp was somewhere in the low 30's or high 20's with a real feel less than that. I didn't feel like turning on the shop heat for a few hours.
I did start it after I found the leak, but couldn't see where it was coming from.

Not sure I would want a case of the thing that just failed and drained the blood out of the heart of my transportation.

Good point. But Wix being the standard to be judged by for the most part, may appreciate the heads up if there's a problem with a certain run of filters. You rarely hear of a problem with them.

Ryan, I'm really curious as to what kind of reply you get from Wix, but I think that if you haven't already let the cat outta the bag, it would be more true to what the average guy will hear from them if you DO NOT tell them you sit in the catbird seat for so many gearheads.
Then please, come back here where we all will seeit and let us know what they say.
