Projects 1931 Model A Coupe Y-Block Build (Father&Son)

I like the idea! It'll be a cool car for sure

 

Fabricated the roll hoop under the cowl to mount the steering column to. I'm using the original column drop and ignition switch out of my dads '40 ford coupe. We have future plans of making a full roll cage. Dash is mounted as well, had to do some minor adjustments to get it to fit just right. Not sure what the dash is out of, had to be from the early '30s though.

 

You do some NICE metal work. AND quick as a flash.

 

That underdash cage is very nice, most excellent.

haven't posted on here for a while but man your car rules. love Y blocks and model A's - you're doing everything right.

 

I'll be using a '49-'54 pickup truck gas tank in my coupe. We took about 13 inches out of, the tank will be mounted behind the seat and you can access it through the trunk. The tank should hold around 12 gallons.

That exhaust is sweet. Interesting that the crossed primaries are the opposite bank from an SBC. The Y Block has a distinct sound all its own, guess I never considered the firing order.

Amazing work and a lot of nice TIG welding. Being only 22 myself, it is good to see that I am not the last one haha. It sure seems like that here in San Diego sometimes. Most of my friends are more interested in the touchscreen inside the new Tesla than even going near a classic car show. You have an inspirational build here. And by the way, since I didn't see it mentioned, when did you start this project?

•Front wheels/tire: 5.00 16- Excelsior Radial

They are all 40 ford coupe wheels, the fronts are actually the originals off of my dads coupe. But the rears are widened to 6 inches.

 

Thank you very much! All the TIG welding is my dad though, he's really good at that. I'm... okay at it haha. Yeah unfortunately a lot of guys around our age are into the tuner stuff and the newest cars which is lame to me. But a lot of them can't afford to buy or build a hot rod or have someone teach them how to do it like us. We're just the lucky ones! I started building the car in August of 2014.

I fabricated my own spring shackles 5/16" longer than original to get the shackle angle where we wanted it. Also can't remember if I've mentioned this before in the thread or not but I'm using '36 wishbones on the front . We moved the spring behind the axle, so we had our friend that's a machinist mill down the thick part of the bones where the spring use to mount. It looks more attractive that way.

Got the coupe to sit the way we want it to. I'm using the original front wheels off my dads '40 Ford Standard Coupe, and the rears are '40 as well but we widened them to 6 inches.

•Rear wheels/tire: 7.50 16- Excelsior Radial

 

So does this essentially drop the spring pack down which drops the car down with it? Because the longer shackle goes down further than the original?

 

Well we didn't do it to lower the car, normally that is the case. We did it because the new standard eye spring was a little too narrow for the spring mounts we already had welded to the wishbones.

Turned the firewall around in the car for more room for the engine. But instead of just turning the fire wall around we turned the bead back around. We did that so that way it doesn't really look like we just flipped the firewall around. Also the clearance for the bell housing at the bottom of the firewall faces the wrong way when you just turn it around. It's a lot of extra work but definitely worth it.
