Hey guys, I'm headed to Stockholm for work next week from 2/8-2/13 and wondering if there is any hot rod happenings that week? I know it's a touch colder there than Texas, so most events are in the summer, but let me know if there are shops, swaps or museums that are worth hitting up.
Stockholm, Sweden, early-mid february... A touch colder than Texas sounds quite right, a few degrees over freezing if the forecast for that week is correct. So likely wet, possibly snow, ice, salt, sand and everything else we dislike about winter. No, there will not be any hotrod happenings then, most enthusiast cars are hibernating until sometime in may when the weather is... well, lets call it "acceptable". A quick web search does not find any classic car/hotrod related events, only a motorcycle swapmeet in Enköping north of Stockholm the 13:th, exclusively for Indian motorcycles and parts according to the description so I wouldn't expect it to be very big. I found a list of motor related museums and such, something might be of interest. http://fredrikhesse.webs.com/motormuseumisthlm.htm Not a whole lot of cars, a few museums are closed for winter, but there might be something worth a look. With a bit of luck someone from the area will chime in with something better. I live 200 miles from our capital and haven't been there for probably 18 years... and I'm happy keeping it that way. Not quite hotrod related, but at least a motoring event: Rally Sweden, the Swedish part of the world rally championship happens at the 11th to 14th. Some distance away from where you'll be and not really suitable for just dropping by taking a quick look, so it probably doesn't work out to go there, but you never know. http://www.rallysweden.com/
I don't know about car stuff there, but. I spent a few days in Sweden on business many years ago. I hadn't been to Europe before. I was in awe of some of the OLD buildings. I thought my house was old at a 100+ years, over there it's 1000+ years. Had dinner in a restaurant in the cellar of a centuries old stone building in Stockholm, had a great reindeer steak, and another dinner at a castle on a huge lake. Also how neat and clean everything was, at least what I saw in the spring when I was there. I hadn't thought about it in a while, great memories, thanks for reminding me. Take in the differences, Enjoy your time!
There will be very little sunlight. Gets sorta light around 10 am and by 3:30 it is getting dark. No wonder they drink a lot! Take clothes that you layer for warmth. Stockholm is very enjoyable. Food is good if you like fish. The old town in on an island and has great walking areas to see some really old stuff. I stayed in a small hotel there about 15 years ago and there was a small cabinet on the wall. I opened the small door on it and there was a card in English that said the cabinet was made in 1300 AD. Closed the door very carefully!!!
Drink alot? Don't know if I'd agree with that, alcohol tax is so high it's too expensive to drink alot. A 70cl bottle of Jack Daniels costs 309SEK, about $36. The fish might be good, but not something I like. I much rather go for something more like a pizza, although you might want to ask someone where to get the best pizza in the area - quality varies alot. 1000 years is a bit high, but you are right, a hundred years isn't a whole lot here. Build it well and take care of it, and it'll last forever.
Yes, go to the Vasa museum. It will blow your mind. It's like one of thosee thread's on the HAMB where somebody recovered an old Ford buried on a river bank and brought it back to life. The Vasa is a warship that sank in 1628, spent more than 300 years on the bottom, then was recovered and preserved in the 1960s. Here's a picture--that's not a model, it's the original ship, housed in a huge musuem!
Visit this place http://www.worldofclassics.se/ and since you are a texan it might be unique experience to take a boat Cruise through icy waters...
