But Rusty Rocket, did they have the tube-nuts to replace the ones you dropped under the workbench? You know, the goofy two-piece male and female screws that '32's have on the top of the window moldings.
The local True Value and OSH have new bins with ALMOST every type screw, but I was looking for the oval head slot screws like you and all they have is Phillips. It is for the window trim on my '35.
Looks like these guys have them https://www.boltdepot.com/Sheet_metal_screws_Slotted_oval_head_Stainless_steel_18-8_8.aspx?nv=l
I'm becoming more and more of an Ace Hardware fan, home depot is 18 minutes away, menards is at least 20 min, Ace is 4 minutes. Ill pay up to save a half hour, the nut and bolt selection is good, and I buy the quantity I need instead of 7 per bag. They stock j nuts and square nuts too, been using the square nuts a lot as weldnuts lately.
Might be, but there are none like the original Ford size. Gotta have a very small diameter head on the barrel. Pretty sure it's a specialty part.
the nut and bolt place near me sells the screws with the smaller head. for example they are listed as a #8 with#6 head. trim screws. just be careful walking in the store looking for a screw and a little head.
Crazy Steve is right. If you can get away with Phillips head, McMaster-Carr has #8 x 1" SS sheet metal for $8.24 for a box of 100. I buy all my hardware from McMC. You can't beat their price and delivery.
I also buy from McMaster Carr. They ship to me in a day, and they are cheap Yes I wind up with extras, but with the low cost who cares. I buy in stainless and polish the heads.
I get a lot of fasteners at Home Depot and Lowes. Usually have something that will work. I have heard that for larger bolts and nuts, a Catapillar dealer is the cheapest place to buy them. All US made, or at least they were a few years ago when I was told this.
Fastenal sponsors Nascar, but they tell me they don't really cater to the automotive field. I usually strike out there. But, ACE , Lowes, Home Depot, and a couple of mom & pop hardware stores that service the local oil industry handle my needs.
It must depend on which fastenal you go to. The one near me has never let me down. There's enormous growth around DC as the government continues to grow, so does the population and all the housing and services that go with it. So I guess my local fasenal has to be well stocked.
In Seattle with the large boating population, We have several good stainless fastener stores. The best by far is Stoneway Hardware on stone way ave, near north Lake Union. If its stainless and it has threads, they got it. All sizes, threads and heads. I never go there without a specific list to stop me from buying far too many things I really don't need, the also have bronze, brass, natural finish bolts and nuts, and any special weird nits and bold you can dream up. just sayin' brasscarguy
I went to the local Fastenal once. Forget the exact stuff I was looking for...but they had none of them in stock. Available...but not in stock...and it wasn't really odd ball, just fine thread in some larger size. Anyway, the girl at the counter told me they only stock what they sell a lot of and ordering stuff meant you ordered a box...not individuals. NOT buying 50 large fine thread bolts when I only need 4! That thought process puzzles me completely. How do you grow if you only service your current customers needs? Didn't think it was out to lunch to expect a fastener store to stock a few boxes of fine thread bolts and nuts! Locally, KENTS (they have automotive bins in the bolt isle), Parts for Trucks (Excellent quality G8 stuff..inc fine thread in large sizes) and NL Distributors (Fastener supply, fully stocked with anything and everything apparently...but I've never been. Too far for a lunch break dash and grab...loL) blows them out of the water. Doubt I'll ever be bothering with "Fasten-#@&$-all" again...
Guess I'm just lucky with the fastensal near me, they have smaller quantity bags too. Not trying to defend them, just saying they must vary a lot.
I don't think its the franchise itself thats the issue. I believe the local store has a target industrial customer base and so the regular guy isn't really considered. Maybe with big oil on the down turn around here...along with the economy...they will soon rethink their position!
I started this post about going to my local menards and finding the screws I needed, somewhere along the lines fastenall took over. If you need wood screws for garnish moldings MENARDS has them.
What if I loose my marbles? Good info. I still buy a lot of my hardware @ Ace but sometimes I can't find what I want at Ace.
Yes loose your marbles or have a few lose screws, A guy might be able to get some help. I do 99% of my hardware shopping at ace but they didnt have screws that matched the garnish mold screws.
In case anyone is interested, those weird trim screws with the small heads are called Jackson Head screws. They have a #6 head and a #8 body. You can buy there here... www.althafasteners.com Chris
