GASSER MUST HAVES and cant haves?

    Don't get me started on white ceramic. I thought it would be the bees knees as well. But when I went to pick them up, the white was very translucent and it had visible runs (AND THIS WAS FROM A VERY REPUTABLE SHOP). Any way I said there is no way I am taking them, they look like an 8 year old shaker canned them. As you can imagine that sort of hurt the shops feelings (and rightfully so!). Anyway they suggested the polished look and with that as my only option I agreed. But it simply was not the look I wanted. So I opted to have them blast the outside of the headers only (meaning the inside was still coated and I did them the old fashioned way...White VHT!

    I don't know...I am thinking maybe just sheet metal roll/filler pan back there and maybe an old school push bar.

    Just needs to stick out more. And maybe roll the edges on the sheet metal.

    Gassers of all years need factory stock bumpers to fit the program, since they need to look like a streeter

    Did the alumicoat on my Stude headers approx. 8 yrs. ago and they still look good.

    I had the headers on my gasser alum sprayed, it lasted very well but it gets dirty in a heart beat

    If you get a drop of oil on them when they are hot its on there for good, like taking the rocker covers off right above the header you have to very care full not to drop any oil

    They look like pearl white when they are just done ' cool stuff '

    I don't remember bumpers required; no front bumper or grill or rear tires sticking out was immediate thrown into gas class..Rear bumpers disguised as push bars for rear weight addition?

    Seb I did not say that bumpers were in the rule book, my take is that a stock rear bumper looks a bunch better than a chunk of big tubing

    The gassers started out being fast streeters, so in keeping with the spirit of a true gasser they should look as stock as you can make your car and still be a racer like I did with my 37'

    Just my 2 cents worth

  11. DND. I remember the early gassers had to have almost all the stuff of a street car. Lights, interior, etc. It is my understanding a lot of them were driven to the track, and raced.

    Hey DND, where did you have your headers aluminized? I'd like to have a set done that way but can't seem to find anyone doing it anymore.

    According to Byron Stack and Don Montgomery, 1962 was the year that Gassers changed from including hot street cars to all out race cars. Most of the street equipment rules were dropped that year.

  15. I am considering the white VHT over ceramic like Larry suggested. I will break in the silver as well as test the outside temp.

    It looks like the feds have put the arm on alum spraying now days, batting zero trying to find a shop out here in so-cal

    Since it was 63' when mine were done that shop is long gone too

    Found this in a great video of car haulers and how race cars were moved in the 60's. Great video with a LOT of super stars of the 60's too many too new for HAMB, the grump, sox and martin, ford drag team etc.

    Note stock front axle and level stance :rolleyes:

  22. Totally awesome video, makes you wonder where all these different cars ended up, were they parted and then sent to the boneyard or are they packed away in some building. Makes you wonder!! :(:confused::D

    The video is neat but it is all about the hi-buck guys, most of the early gasser guys were lo-buck guys like me that put every penny we made just to build & race our cars

    We just had a tow bar that worked just fine, plus the extra cost of a trailer you had to have a place to store it too

    Flat towing ruled !!
