I would love to know exactly what is being done here if someone doesn't mind explaining. Ive only seen gaps being tightened up using body filler.

 

He is widening the hood gaps by cutting out a thin strip (the width of the cut off wheel) hammering the outside flange in to eliminate the gap created by the cut off wheel and then welding it back together again. Conversely if he was trying to reduce the hood gap he could do the same thing but push the flange out and put a filler strip of metal in the gap created and again weld it back up.

 

Ok that's what I thought was going on. Thank you for explaining it. Is there a good tutorial somewhere on here I could get some more pointers on before trying it on my car?

Looking outstanding Eric.....there needs to be a gathering of the Shoeboxes at the GNRS in one of the main buildings because there are some beautiful Mercs out there but in the past few years there are some stunning Shoeboxes also.

 

Make it several years out so I can get mine done too!

Started fitting the 54 Merc hood. I'll cut and butt weld as I go. I will then replace the chrome scoop with rod and sheet metal.

 

Now that's a mod I don't recall seeing on a shoebox, before! Very interesting.

 

Thats funny your putting that scoop on And i think that is the worst part of my 54 merc i want to take it off.

 

Picked my top up from the painter.

 

Look forward to seeing the hood scoop done.

I have the 54 hood cut and tacked in. Now I'm making the scoop from scratch.

 

I'm confused. Aren't you using the Merc scoop?

 

No, it's too busy. I'm building the scoop from rod and sheet.

 

I wasnt sure about that scoop idea,but i think that rod/sheet scoop will work fine.

 

I liked the way the scoop echoed the shape of the grill insert. But I see you retained that shape in your re-do of it, so it still works. And the new version is much less "busy." I like it!

 

This car is looking amazing. Love the Merc hood scoop on the shoebox! I always thought they needed something.

They do look better with the trim removed and an opening added. Kind of '50s jet inspired. To each their own!
