Why don't all members off the H.A.M.B. join the Alliance it is only $50.00 a year. It comes out to be only 14 cents a day, pretty cheap for a place where you can get help on all most any problem you have with your car or with life in general. Plus you get to meet some very nice people. Just my way of thinking, and you get money off services thru the Alliance venders.
Cause I don't have 50 bucks? Hell its only about $0.14 a day and I do accept charity, something I have had to learn to do since beginning my golden years and life on a fixed income. Ok my situation aside and you should not feel compelled to shell out a dime on my account, a lot of the fellas probably see the cost and don't see the benefit. As someone once said, "Why buy the cow when the milk is free." Then there are others that feel compelled to help and never ask for an alliance membership in return. Just something that are rattling around in my head here, don't take it as gospel.
I think that being an Alliance member is a great way to say thanks for the forum and what Ryan and the others do. As far as not being able to afford it goes, how much does a guy spend on smokes or beer every day. And if you don't smoke or drink then even your daily trip to the coffee shop, or donut shop or whatever, how much does that cost ? But they can't afford it.
I thought I heard something... I reckon you have helped me some 'Beaner, I'll buy you an Alliance membership if you want one.
I am sure Ryan appreciates everyone who joins the Alliance. In my case, it is the right think to do as I get many customers from here, but even if I was not in the transport business, I would join anyway. I enjoy the people here & the information available is second to none!
Well I do smoke. I haven't been out for coffee or a donut in a long time, I drink once a year. I may have drank 50 dollars worth this year though. I evidently lost an entire evening. Let me leave it at this, I normally can supplement my pension with wrench work. Normally being the operative word here. Alas I digress, some of the people on here that are already living on barley get along street don't have that option. I certainly would not want to be the one to guilt them into shelling out the extra cash. Caballo, The missus and I were chatting and you came up just the other night. You have more than repaid anything we have ever done for you. You have done well and we are proud to know that. I am resourceful and can pretty much have anything I want. The absolute best thing that you can ever do for us is just what you are already doing. Build a good life and know that we are damned proud to know you.
I was an alliance member as long as I could afford it now being on rocking chair money I can't afford 50 dollars. I worry about filling my gas bottles when necessary.
I agree. It's true that not everyone can afford it but the ones who can, should. I join every year since I found the HAMB (2007) and have "anonymously" given a few alliance memberships to fella who have helped me out, inspired my projects or seemed deserving. I wish I could afford to give more memberships away - the money helps the HAMB after all, and it's a thing worth supporting. And the vendors who offer discounts are helping too. Shoot, just today I saved half my membership fee in parts! Not that I need the discount to see the value but it sure feels good in this economy to save a few bucks!
I have been a member and I have not been a member, some I have paid for and some have just magically appeared. I don't recall ever actually using my membership to buy parts, but I do know that it can be a good deal. Here's the deal, there is nothing wrong with a membership and it does help pay for bandwidth. We use a lot of bandwidth, some of it wasted and some of it not but the end of the day someone has to pay the bills. The Alliance membership is one way to help, the Boss has made it available on a volunteer basis in an effort to keep the HAMB free for all to enjoy. If one is in a position to do so then by all means lend a hand to keep the HAMB free for all to enjoy and if not then by all means enjoy what those who can have provided for you.
I have an idea. Let's do a modified version of "paying it forward". Use the money to provide memberships for those who actually can not afford one. Take a part you don't need, that is usable, stick it on here. Send to the guy that needs it and He sends the money to Ryan???? I'm sure there need to be other rules/considerations but this is the basic idea. What do ya think? Tim
The Alliance is supposed to pay for the enormous bandwidth we use up misunderstanding other people's threads, putting up o/t junk, picking fly shit out of the pepper, and bloviating.
Beano: I pm'd Ryan and floated the idea past him and left it there. If He is cool with it, I'll get it started. I have a nice headlight off a '35 Ford p.u. I'll give up and even pay the shipping. There's more to it than this but at this point is only an idea.
For me the Alliance Membership is the easiest way to say "Thank you for running the HAMB!" I have to admit, I never used it to get a discount from a vendor, never thought of it and I have no idea, who the vendors are that would give me a discount... The info on here always has been and still is worth a lot more to me than a few bucks off , but there may be a time, when I won´t be able to afford a membership anymore, when my teeth get long an there is a need to save a dollar or two. But that´s 40 or 50 years from now, hahahahaha
I did just the opposite Baumi, I knew I had a ton of money to spend in parts over the last couple of years and I used the Alliance membership as sort of an investment. I saved in excess of $500 last year alone on Limeworks, Brassworks, Coker, American Speed, Brookville, Eastwood, Obrien's, and many others. It isn't the only reason I joined...I also dig the cool plaques. I'd be happy to donate to the cause.
I've been meaning to join for the last few years, but something always comes up. With a six year old in the home, money's always tight, but joining is going to happen this year. I'm guilty of wasting bandwidth, and I'm probably not much help on here, but I'm a Hamb addict, with no immediate cure in sight.
I joined the ALLIANCE to support the HAMB. The plaque was a nice perk, love it! Also got in on the license plate topper...a few folks have asked "What's the HAMB?" I reply, "Bacon fat." Then, just as quickly (so I don't 'lose' them) I up with how to find the Jalopy Journal on the internet. A few have joined, so it's all good. Tried to use it for a HAMB discount for my Rebel wire kit, but there was no way to apply it. Ended up buying Rebel wire from an EBay vendor with free shipping...so I ended up even. Don't try to beat the ALLIANCE by diving in the Bay. This was an isolated incident.
I use the classified a lot, selling and buying but more selling. It's only fair that I purchase the membership. It shows my appreciation to Ryan for allowing me to use the classified section. In addition you get the cool alliance member tag, plus it gives you first dibs on the specials that come up every so often like the special run on the shift knobs. Thanks again for knob #34 to use on my 34 coupe. It's also another level of insurance when buying. I feel more secure buying from an alliance member. I encourage everyone who can afford it to buy an alliance membership.
I would pony up for one except I am a cheap bastard. it is in my DNA as I am Scottish, so I can't help it.
