Some recent news from Tom Malloy regarding his search for the Malloy Special remnants

    UPDATE 3-11-2016
    Carl,
Update on the hunt for the Malloy Spl. – Tom found/bought the car that has Emmett’s offy engine #144. We also now have the actual trophy that Ernie Lowe (driver) won at Sharon Speedway in 1962 (see photo). His son Denny brought it here from Ohio and donated it to the Foundation. Ooooooooooh we are getting closer…….even my bones are excited…….now we just need to shake loose the old chassis. The hunt is still on.
Tom is at Amelia Island and all is going well.
    Be well,

    Hello again Paul,
There has been a search going on for the remains of the 1953-4 Malloy Special Indycar, later to become a sprintcar that was last seen and campaigned in 1970s PA. Hence this request to you and your PA associates for any info that can help in locating the car.
Tom Malloy et All have been searching the past few years for the current remains of the 1953 (Emmett) Malloy Special. One of two built by Bob Pankratz – the sister car resides in the PNW whilst the Malloy Car went through a number of transformations and was last seen as a sprint car in the PA area in the 70s before being sold by Akron based Hobe Nestor.
I’m pretty sure I contacted you when I first began helping Tom look for the car via the internet two years ago but just in case you missed it, here’s the data once again.
We’ve had thousands of ‘hits’ and some leads that have led to the current ‘last seen’ data.
Would you see what you can do to help Tom locate the remnants of this car?
Very much appreciate any help you can offer.
Also want to thank you for the EARHS Newsletters you have forwarded to me.
    Best Regards
    Carl

M.Hart"Thank you Mitch. I have a little more info. The car was sold by Malloy in 1955. It then became the Morcroft Special driven by Jimmy Davies 1956 #3 then driven by Gene Hartley in 57-58 #88, Eddie Johnson in 1955 #5. I will post some pictures of the car when it was last seen. It is thought to be in the midwest. It has a Chevy in it with a roll cage. It is #63 In the photo, the car still has the long brake handle on the left side. Thank you again."

Tom’s Response to Jalopy Journal- he said you would post it for him :
    Rottie,
Bob Pankratz built two champ cars. The first car was for Sid Street that appeared at Indy in 1951 and 1952 but did not qualify either year – this is the car you are talking about that Buzz Barton drove.
The second car (which is the one I am looking for), Bob started building in 1952 (it looked exactly like the Sid Street car). It showed up for the first time in the 1953 at Indy but failed to qualify. It returned in 1954 to qualify 7th and finished 17th. It returned again in 1955 to qualify 15th and finished 33rd. Jimmy Reece drove it both times as the Malloy Special. I hope this information clears-up thing referencing the two car and which we are looking for.

Rootie, that isn't 1958 Sachs. My guess is 1957. Car had a roll bar in 1958, eddie wore a silver helmet then.

Interestingly, only 1 roadster ever led a dirt race. Johnny Boyd, above led some of the 1957 Phoenix 100. Wild race. Jimmy Bryan leading, goes through the fence lap 97, keeps it running, comes back on track and catches Pat O'connor for the win.

Chris recently contacted me about Gus Schrader's Offy. I imagine it's in a museum somewhere, does anyone know the location of the car?

I have an article from 1983 circle track magazine of this restored Schrader's Sprinter car #5. I would love to find this car just to see it. My Grandfather was 'Wild Bill' Anderson who was killed in this car at a race in Mitchell Indiana. Is there anyone who I can contact to see where this car is today? It would mean a lot to me, thanks.

Rootie, it`s strange that Beckley had the hand brake hooked up for a dirt race. The hand brake was for a second set of calipers . Great photo !

USAC had an "on again/off again" rule requiring a backup brake system around 1961 and 1962. Some mechanics and builders complied with it and others apparently didn't. At any rate for some reason it was apparently never seriously enforced. Watson was one that complied with the rule and you will notice an outside hand brake on Ward's 500 winner in 1962. Obviously, the Agajanian car that Parnelli was leading the 500 with did not have a backup brake of any kind and he ended up running into tires to try to stop in the pits during the 500.

Watson had two sets of single spot Halibrand calipers on the rear of his cars with one set being operated by the brake pedal and the second set operated by the external brake lever. Beckley likely did something similar.

Notice also in that photo that Foyt is wearing a Sam Browne belt and no shoulder harness. Double "over the shoulder" harnesses attached to the lap belt were not made mandatory by USAC until the 1963 season. If that sounds late it wasn't until something like 1969 or 70 that Formula One made any kind of seat belt mandatory. Someone here may know the exact year but it was quite a bit later than the USAC rule.

Rootie, Do you know what powered this car? It looks like a 4-valve inline six?

I believe it is a Fageol truck/bus engine, but don't know if the 4 valve head was production or made for racing. Capture 1949-1.JPG

I think you are spot on Rootie. The Fageol production bus, truck, and industrial engine was a SOHC 12 valve cross flow utilizing rocker arms for valve actuation.

My guess on the engine is that it was a special 18 or 24 valve head Fageol made for his major racing interest which was Gold Cup hydroplanes which Cantrell drove for him at times although Fageol also drove.

I know this is a picture thread, so I'll understand if you guys don't want to muddy the thread up with a lot of tech talk. I'd like some details on the sbc engines of these cars of mid to late 50's. If I recall, Traco was one of the big name engine builders. I know it would be easy to do a Google search, but would rather hear it first hand from you guys.

Well I feel stupid, checked my photos and that handle is in all of them. Guess it`s nothing four calipers, a brake handle, master cylinder and brake lines wont fix.
