A bit breezy in Kansas. I made it to New Mexico. Dinner time. 600 miles to go.

    thanks!

The truck did great...I brought along my toolbox, but never needed to open it. I'm surprised.

3 quarts of oil, a couple quarts of water, put air in one tire, and cleaned the windshield countless times. Oh...and the gas....I'll get the numbers after a while.

It's nice to type on a real keyboard again.

just crunched the numbers on fuel and miles...17.5 mpg on the trip, average.

  17. That's pretty darn good all things considered.

  18. Hope you don't mind but I sent the picture of the kids loading up in NYC, to some of my friends who say they can't drive their rods long distance, and the teachers who don't like doing extra-curricular activities. Way to go!

That's pretty much exactly the same mileage my 2014 1/2 ton crew Ford work truck gets on road trips.

That's damn good...I get that in my 2011 Silverado and it has OD and fluctuates back & forth between V8 and V4.

    What's in that thing??

That's outstanding MPG in my mind Jim! Let's face it a 50s era suburban isn't and wasn't built to be a aerodynamic fuel efficient machine! Joe

    thanks!

The sub has a tired 1987 350 with a Qjet on an older iron intake, and an HEI. Backed by a TH400 with a Gear Vendors, and a 3.08 rear gear.

I drove mostly between 65 and 75 depending on the speed limits. and slower when weather conditions and traffic were bad.

  24. Another great road trip, and adventure completed, and with us riding along in cyberspace.
Glad you made it safely, and the fact that you guys didn't win the comp, is of no issue, you won the coolness side, hands down.

  25. ...............This brings up an interesting discussion, Jim. I'm old enough to remember when the Feds instituted the nationwide 55 mph speed limit during the contrived gas shortages of the 1970's in an effort to conserve fuel. I railed against it indicating that many vehicles got better fuel mileage at 65-75 than at or below 55. I would wager that with your set-up you would have gotten worse fuel economy if you had stayed at 55 mph. Didn't mean to hijack the thread, just wanted to say that. Kudos once again to you for a job well done. You're an inspiration to us all..........Don.

Great to hear that you made it back safe and sound. I'd be totally happy with that kinda mileage out of any old car . Pretty realistic oil consumption also. The Suburban rocks !

The suburban seems to do best on gas when I'm going about 65. It has to work to get through the air at 75.

I haven't driven it enough only at 55 to know what kind of mileage it gets.

That's really interesting. I noticed that my 2011 Silverado does best at 45MPH suffers at 55MPH and gets into a groove at 65MPH. Anything over 65 and it drops off again.

So much for present day technology. I would rather be running your set up because I can work on the F##$%^ thing myself.
