Hot Rods Another deuce build thread but hopefully different

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hb32, Mar 10, 2015.

  1. Well after a lot of consideration and the bucket load of $$$`s I would need to get it to an acceptable level, I won`t be pursuing the Banger in my 32 pickup after all. I am in the process of acquiring a rebuilt flattie to replace the banger so a slight turn off course. Selling off parts in the classifieds to fund the new mill.

HOLY CRAP. That's a seismic shift in direction old buddy. Are you SURE about this? Honestly, if it were me, I probably would (I would probably skip right over the flatty and put a mid fifties 2x4 Packard V8 in it:rolleyes:), but you have gathered such good stuff up till now. Are you sure about this??

  3. Yeah I know George but the cost of getting the little banger up to snuff was far outweighing the green in my wallet
Working on acquiring a 59A for the replacement.

  6. No whitewalls or shiny paint on my ride
I wanted the banger to be different but also wanted a flattie for the looks.

well, judging by the way that stuff is moving on the classifieds, I'd say its too late to turn back now...:D

  8. Moving forward on the pickup, I have definitely shelved the banger and am having a C69A built to replace it.
Meanwhile I will be looking for the parts required to convert from the banger to V8 as in rad, V8 gas pedal, intake and other pieces.

  9. No real movement to report but as things progress, things change. Sold off most of the banger parts to good homes.
Removed the damper as well as the banger gas pedal. I am now looking for a V8 rad and gas pedal.
Latest pics with the empty hole looking for a motor.

if you look at Dennis Lacy's '32 pickup build thread, a 283 will bolt right in there...and cheap too ;)

If you are planning on installing the handbrake linkage in the rear brakes those round grease baffles are going to be in direct interference with the link bars that cross horizontally from the front shoe to the lever attached to the rear shoe. That's exactly why the '39-'48 baffles have a flat across the top.

  13. Progress in parts gathering, but thats about it.
I found an original V8 rad and it is out for a recore. Also have an original spoon pedal assy to install as well as original V8 mounts once the motor shows up.
Settled on an intake, block letter Edelbrock regular, as well as a pair of 97`s, pictured below on the kitchen table before the wife gets home and now looking for block letter heads. Plans are to run the gen up front with a fan on it but that may change depending on clearance issues.
Undecided on decent original heads or new out of the box, for better all round quality.

  15. Picked up a second top loader trans a couple of weeks ago as my first had a bad cluster gear tooth. It has perfect gears in it with slight bearing wear where the first had new bearings. In the process of swapping bearings and just need to figure out how to remove the snap ring on the main shaft. Block is out of the machine shop and awaiting assembly.

  16. I am not sure if I have given you this info before so I will err on the side of caution. It's hell to get old. Some of these hurtles you have already passed but I wanted to keep the list intact.

The following changes need to be made when replacing a Model B with a V8 (21 stud, others will require a few more things):

    Of course engine, motor mounts

Muffler and exhaust system before muffler (same after)

    Radiator

Radiator support rods This one usually gets overlooked until the last minute.

    Engine steady rods

    Hubcaps

Starter switch (if it is early B with pull starter, yours looks late based on the firewall so you are probably ok on this)

Transmission (gears interchange but cases are different)

    Choke (B is a cable, V8 is a rod)

    Accelerator linkage

    Engine splash pans

Gas line needs to be routed from right on Model B to left on V8

The B will have a few extra holes in the firewall pad from mounting the 4 cyl engine snubber

Need to add emblem to headlight bar

Need to accept the fact that the serial number (VIN) is for a 4 cylinder

Interesting to note the increase in value for the car is about the same as the cost of making the change

  17. I did see this several years ago Charlie and thanks for posting.
I do have a few items checked off on your list above.
No intention of fooling any one by passing it off as an original 32 and more trying to recreate a pre 50`s hotrod pickup, if there was such a thing.
I am gathering mostly original parts, where possible, to look the part.

  18. Subscribed. Love this build!

Get those old eyes checked Todd. Hehehe

  24. Yeah I am hoping George.
Ordered everything I need to finish rebuilding the transmission this week, so I can bolt it on the back and get it between the rails.
Took apart the shifter today and need to replace some springs , otherwise the rest is good. May need you to come over for some assistance when I set it in the mounts. Still have a few items to source and have not decided on 6 or 12 volts. Selling the gen I have and looking for an original that I can bolt an original deuce fan that I was fortunate to find local
Decided to stay with stock iron heads for now.
Other then that, not much to say.

  25. Looks blue but original Ford green from the late 40's
I was on the fence about having it painted as nothing will be as nice or shiny and am trying to keep it looking " barn find " for a lack of a better term.

Can do next week, sunny right now, so i am trying to get garage time in. I think theres one nice day next week, other than that, any time.

  27. Won't be until the motor is in the garage and the trans is bolted onto it.

    Tell me about it!

  29. One more piece of the puzzle is completed. Finished off the transmission overhaul this afternoon and not sure if the clutch arm is positioned right. Also need to find torques for the front and rear bearing retainers. May get my motor early as well and just might make deuce days in Victoria.
