    Tommy
This shot and the batch from @thehazguy really got me worked up.
Being a Chevy guy since buying my first car, a 61 Impala at fifteen(61 now) and not being (having the guts) able to admit to my GM pals my infatuation with the Plymouth's and Dodges of the 63 to 65 era, has led to me being "in the closet" so to speak.
It was these sedans that had my nose glued to car mags throughout the early to mid 60's, wishing I could make my first car just like the ones you guys posted here.
I nearly bought a 64 Barracuda (used), as a first car, even though what i really wanted was a Savoy or Dodge 330, but the test drive produced a noisy rear end and my mother said let's try the Impala parked next to it on the used car lot.
Well, as they say, "that's history", and my dreams of owning a Mopar soon faded.

Tommy I had no idea of what you were talking about with Billy The Kid. Had to look it up.

Never heard the story before and your right,
    probably best he was smiling!

A little more history thanks to the HAMB.

Thanks for the photos 296ardun and the pm nickthebandit.
Nice car, very chassis research at the front, copy or just because it used standard available parts like everybody else ?
Seems longer wheelbase than the chassis research te440 , is it ?
I like the way the bottom rail tube bends into being part of the safety cage.
Would like to see more pics of the chassis.
Aparently the car is still around with the original owner ?
Would love some dimensions from the chassis.
    Thanks,david.

David, I think it is about the length of a TE440 (I had one), though the TE440 front ends were originally sprung with a rubber biscuit inside a tube, and a v-shaped axle...when NHRA banned them, we built a gusset over the tube, and added a spring perch for a more traditional spring......Merkel's car is more traditional, with a Ford transverse spring and axle.....I don't know if the car has survived....guessing it is made from mild steel tubing, because it was easy to bend and weld (didn't need heliarc)....

Pete Robinson, photo by Jim Kelly. Pete was one of the more innovative builders in drag racing, notice that the rear wheels are mounted backwards to get the tires maybe an inch or so inward......

  25. Tommyd, was this Apple Wedge from downriver of Detroit? I have a fading recollection of seeing this car drive past me while standing in front of the Wyandotte Theater off Biddle Ave around 1964 or 65..... That's about a 10 minute drive from Detroit Dragway

I know this is just a picture thread but I have a question. I've always been intrigued with dual engine dragsters. But I don't understand why they mixed different engines together. Any engine revs and has limits unique to the design. Is there an easy answer why a SBC and a hemi were used together? If the explanation doesn't belong here maybe shoot me a PM. Thanks too, for all the great pics! I was born on the right coast and missed all the SoCAl stuff except in magazines..

Probably not what you want to hear but there is no easy answer - and hopefully someone here will have a good answer. The most logical would be racer A had a car and engine and wanted to have a twin, racer B had an engine and no car and wanted to race a twin, must consider a bunch of guys just got together and pooled their resources. Have to really stop and scratch your head when Mickey Thompson for whatever reason built one considering all the resources available to him. There were several of them: http://twotogo.homestead.com/dtbd.html Thanks for asking.

You can bet if M/T did something there was a pretty good reason for it.
