  2. I completely understand that the general public doesn't quite get a high-boy roadster. I mean I know "car guys" who really don't "get" a fenderless car. That said, I was totally thrown off-guard at a cruise-in one time when a nice lady asked me if my Roadster was an early Indy car. Huh, what????. DSCN7763 (1) (1) (3).JPG

A couple of weeks ago in Havasu at the Havasu Deuce Days, a guy walked up and said he liked my 32 roadster the best because I "didn't have that much $$ in it".....he said "some of these cars probably cost $100,000" There were a couple of 32 Victorias, a B400, and some really high buck cars. Then another guy asked "are you retired?" I said no, and he said "when you retire, you can finish your car." Hmmmm.....car is done in a patina style, guess he thinks it needs to be painted.

Went to a swap meet [ Wayback machine Sherman] With matching dual quads, intake, and valve covers off a '66 Beyers flatbottom 425 Buick. Original engine in the boat. The guy gave me an argument that they weren't Buick carbs. The supposed Buick "EXPERT" never heard of Buick Marine. Another guy came by and gave me exactly what I was asking without a question!

  5. One of the most hilarious storys I ever heard was in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at the Grand Run.

Several of my fellow Tri-City Rod and Custom members were parked together and a guy parks a chopped '40 Ford sedan behind our canopy and pulls out a for sale sign and affixes it to the windshield.

He begins to talk to possible buyers for a hour or so and then turns his attention to our direction and starts telling the story to us about how he had chopped the top and reversed the doors, this guy went on and on about all the work he had done.

About this time Alex spoke up and said," Dude, seriously?"

    The guy said,"What?"

Alex stood up and said,"I thought it was amusing that you were taking credit for all the work on the car with the people you were talking to but then you start the same BS thing with us and we all know your lying!"

    The guy still says,"What?"

Alex says," You dumb ass,you bought that car from me right here in Pigeon Forge 4 years ago"

The weather was hot but I don't think that red face was from the heat.

I have never seen 2 guys pack their canopy, chairs and ice chest and leave so fast.HRP

  7. ........................I tell guys to always give credit where credit is due when it comes to work done on their cars. There's nothing more embarrassing for someone than to be caught bald-face lying about work they claimed to do when everyone knows that someone else did it. It's really a pretty small world amongst car people and most are smart enough to sniff out a BS'er even if they don't have first hand knowledge of the person who did the work. Classic story, Danny.:)

Kind of reminds me of a kid I met in a gas station. He saw the Bonneville participant decals in the truck window and asked me if I had actually been to Bonneville. Then he started to tell me all about how cool it was and stuff like that. i asked him if he had been there. He answered yes he was on Rich Fox's pit crew. i said, "But I'm Rich Fox." He said "No. You can't be." "Well I am." He said "Maybe there are two Rich Fox's at the salt." Finally he admitted that he knew my neighbor kid and had seen my car at my house. Pretty embarrassing for him I think.

I took my last rod (very HAMB unfriendly so I won't say what it was).
To set the scene the car was gloss black, tube framed, seriously tubbed and with a blown big-block hanging out of the hood. It had been featured in a few magazines and was generally considered to be quite 'high end'.
A guy comes up and starts to look around it. "good job you didn't cut up a real one" he says.
"Oh but I did" I replied and showed him the VIN
He went beserk. I was lucky not to have been nailed to a burning cross at that point.
I got quite heated and pointed out that his 'purist' friends had stripped out anything that could be unbolted and then weighed the shell in for scrap (I bought the rusty shell from a scrap yard).
Then I told him to f*ck off, and I never went back to that show.

Had a guy argue with me about how my car was fiberglass! Really, I thought he was joking but wasn't. Mines been steel since 1932 . Where do these people come from?

Having a non-mainstream car, I always like to hear the "What is it?" from young and old alike. Lots of people remember the Lincoln Zephyr's from 38 to 41, but the 42-48 is lesser known, especially a couple like mine. I've heard it called everything from a Nash to a Dodge to a Studebaker. When I tell them it's a 47 Lincoln, you should see the looks on their faces. Probably the strangest thing I ever heard it called though was a VW Bug by a teen aged kid. A VW Bug? Really? I could just about put a Bug in the interior ! Maybe it was the sloping deck lid that had him confused....

Been going to shows for about 45 years and one of the most entertaining aspects as I've gotten older is when a father has his young son with him and is "educating" him about (whatever). You no doubt have witnessed this, many times when I've been close by and I hear a bunch of "pure nonsense", I just want to walk by, cup my hand loosely to my mouth and whisper to the dad: Bullshit. Just never had the heart to do it.

I had someone ask me to start the engine so he could hear how it sounded with a 4bbl carburetor.

had a 54 f100 with a 351 Windsor. A guy told me to swap out the 2 bbl with a 4 bbl and it becomes a 390. Okie Doke.

  17. I was at one of our popular shows held at the AACA museum, when I heard a guy telling some people how his engine has around 500-550 HP. Funny thing is, I did some work for him on the car, and the engine would be lucky to be putting out 375 HP on its best day. After the people he said this to walked away, he saw me behind where they were standing. I shook my head and walked off, he looked like a deer caught in the head lights, with his jaw on the ground. What a D#@K!

Soo true , I think I'll start dividing quite a few folks advertised HP figures by 1.50 , then it'd maybe be more like reality. Example, the owners quoted ..... 550 \ 1.5 = 367 that's more realistic. I'll deem it the "braggart horsepower scale". BHP = Pretend HP / 1.50 = Closer to the truth ..... I've tried it on a few hypothetical ratings & it works rather well...... :) Flux

Parked my sedan next to a deluxe coupe at a show----a "tourist" said the coupe is a 40, the sedan is a 39. My sedan is a standard. I didn't even try to tell him..................................

The typical guy telling everyone that'll listen that, when talking about his car says, "it's a Corvette motor", right down to the 2 barrel carb, and heads (???). Guess that's what he was told when he bought the car.
My 56 Sedan Delivery gets the typical "nice Wagon", or even worse, "nice Nomad" comments. OR, that it's "not as rare as a Nomad"; Nomads made 7886, Sedan Deliveries made 7441 in 56, so it's more rare from that standpoint, but even more so that even less have survived due to how they were used and abused. No one has said they used to have one, unless they really did/do, and actually know what they're talking about. Lots of odd things about Sedan Deliveries, so it's nice when someone knows about them too. Oh well, there's a few things I know very little or nothing about.
Used to have people ask if my FED was a dune buggy when stopped for gas or getting food. A dune buggy? The rear engine dragster trailer was fully enclosed. Had one guy ask me what was in the trailer when stopped for gas; I told him, "we were delivering cadavers to a medical school", and asked him if he wanted to take a look. I got an emphatic "NO", and he left rather quickly. Guess he thought we were in need of one more or something.

  27. Interesting. I have a similar formula to deduce when my girlfriend will be ready.

    X + 2/3

For example. If she says I'll be 15 minutes.

    15 + 10 = 25

Maybe he didn't know. Should have told him. Unless he was trying to be an "EXPERT" in front of his friends.
