Man! Somebody lit a fire under your ass for sure! Thx a ton for starting this thread. Lotsa work done since you were down here looking for fenders (that we found). Where'd those red fenders come from?
That lattice work inside the rails is a good idea , and if you box it also, It'll be strong as all hell with no need to worry about it, IMO. The Olds/Pont. rears are super strong when set up with good axles, but I'm told gear ratio selection is limited, but I haven't actually checked. Have a good friend who used to race a '55 Chev. with same rear and Summers Bros. axles, and he left the line with the sbc turning 9K!!!!!!!!!!
Early in the build yet, but if the rules will allow, you might check around and find some pics of the "Orange Crate" '32 tudor from back years ago. They found that on the front fenders acted like an airfoil to lift the front end and caught a lot of air, slowing the top end quite a bit.
So they took a 2 or 3" chassis punch, as used to punch holes in elec. boxes for conduit, and punched the frt. fenders full of holes from the top of the arch all the way back and down to the running boards. IIRC HRM did a cover and a feature story on the car. Just a suggestion for you to consider.

    Diggin' the build, Russticles!
Like the frame stiffenin', but eyeball it good after a few runs, as me thinks you MAY not need to have welded so much around all those webs!
I ain't no Engineer, but look ups some truss work / welding on bridge trusses and the like, ( re: "fish plates")..........Might need to be a little more "give" in there somewhere!

    Rock on, Brother!

Great build. Really looking forward to a 'proper' gasser build as mine is a bit of a personal interpretation....

Dirty ol man Thanks! Those red fenders are some glass ones. They actually came off Jerrys red coupe but i got them from Chad. I love the orange crate we may need some ventilation in the fenders. Good suggestion. StealtyCruiser you can bet your ass i will be watching that frame close. After a few runs for sure and fish plates may be needed

This is what I'm talkin' bout! Interested to see where this goes, it's headed in the right direction. Here's a pic of mine, which I am slowly changing to make more 'race'. BTW, the '69/'70 K5 would make a great tow vehicle.

I completed it last spring, and proceeded to put 1000 street miles on it. This spring / summer, plans are to bring it to the track. I'm currently re-doing the fuel system (Moon tank) to get the gas out of the cab (cowl tank). It will be plumbed with valves to switch between the 2 tanks. New seats and a battery cut-off switch are also in the works. Carry on brother, your car's gonna be great!

Message_1453077001968.jpg The bottom of the car needed way more than i thought. The lip around the bottom in the rear was gone in 3 or 4 spots. No biggie i fixed those only to realize most all the rest was so thin it felt like rubber! This took way longer than i had hoped and welding thin steel is no fun

Here is an early style Victoria Gasser from Texas in the 60s for more inspiration.

I thought that this was part of your top secret strategy of having the body acid dipped to shave off a little weight. ;)

I know where the picture of the red Vicky came from and but that is the only picture that I have ever seen. He ran at tracks in South Texas.

20160211_133705.jpg By the time i finished repairing and replacing the bottom lip around the back i had redone almost all of it. Gave it a quick blast of Zinc to kill the rust and some epoxy primer.

20160131_210535.jpg The rest of the rust repair pics are on my old phone but that stuff is boring anyway. Moving right along.... Its time to invent some floor! Subrails are first on the list, after looking at my tudor i thought i maybe could modify a tudor subrail to work. Then i came to my senses. Do like i usually do, just dive in an see what happens. I got some tubing and hat channel HERE GOES!

Great build - will be following this one. Hope you keep the chrome & white walls up front. Great examples being posted to help the plan. Might want to design the cage along with the body mounting.

Message_1453076960531.jpg Here is the piece along the bottom of the rear where most of the lip needed replaced. Those relief cuts in the tubing turned into a diaster. I actually just bent a piece of tube the second time and got lucky. It fit perfect like it was suppose to be there.

Do you think the guy with the red car was thinking something with the moon covers on the front wheels.
Maybe trying to keep some of the wind out of the fenders.

Message_1454359710899.jpg After much head scratchin cuttin n grinding we have these. Doesnt look like much but lots of time and trial n error fitting the body. These will keep the body connected to the frame.

I think that a lot of the early gassers got their inspiration from what they saw the fast cars at the Lakes and Bonneville doing in the magazines and they ran moons....... Now back to your regularly scheduled programming
