History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

Dean Turk, Woudenberg Pontiac sponsored car from Arizona...saw him race Art Chrisman in the Hustler I at Pomona, late '59...three false starts before Chrisman won the race...

 

I think that this was the old Waters & Murray roadster, originally from California, that ran a 338" Chevy in '56, later was sold, moved to Texas, got the upgrades here, but still ran the original Waters & Murray 555 number...

 

There is something about this car that just grabs me.

A&B Speed Shop Loghee car at Bakersfield. I think these guys were from Massachusetts and towed all the way to Bakersfield only to lose the engine on the first run.....I think Bernie Reigle was involved in this car...anyone else know it better than me??

More Smoker's purple....Bernie Mather, not only a drag racer but also announced at Bakersfield for years...late '50s


and more Smoker's purple...Tony Waters at his home track....this roadster ran a blown Desoto which could run with the top fuelers...runner-up to Chrisman at '59 Bakersfield, then beat the whole field of fuel dragsters at Henderson NV later that year...and LOUD! If you saw it run, you never forgot it (and especially the time when Tony backfired the blower in the lights at the '60 Smoker's meet --- sent the engine cover way up in the air but was unhurt).

You are pretty much right on! They were a good running car and ran at Dover drag strip a lot. The Anglia was before the jr. fueler. Dragster picture is at Dover.

After touring with fellow Burbank Road Kings car club member Tommy Ivo as a crewmember in 1960, Don Prudhomme bought one of Ivo's old dragsters and fitted it with a stock Buick engine. And then upgraded it to HEMI power

 

That was Tommy's first dragster that he had so much success running the injected Buick in. That Hemi was Dave Zeuschel's engine, the one that would later go into Tommy's first Top Fuel car.

 

Jack Schempf from Arizona, far side, Lincoln powered, races Otis Smith of Akron, OH, looks like the '58 NHRA nationals....I think that the Ohio car won A/R class
