I'd suggest revving it up while parked to see if you can see it leak under higher revs, could even put it on jack stands and do it in gear with a helper I guess. Don't know that being in gear should make any difference but....

Could tye a sock around the breather and go for a drive or even tape a white t shirt over imthe whole damg thing and go for a spin. If it's shooting under that much pressure it should make it pretty easy to see where it's coming from

Since it not an obvious leak, maybe time to rule this out. Do a compression check to make sure all cylinders are still sealed.

I'll have to second this since you only seem to have the problem after you put the engine under load. In fact, a leakdown test might even be better than a compression test.

A small input from a Stationary Engineer 's views on pressure vessels such as an oil filter when hydraulically full of pressurized oil . You must multiply the oil system pressure by the area of the filter in square inches to reach total force applied to the filter seal and housing of the filter . With that being said and calculated , a smaller size filter is way less likely to explode at higher oil pressure that the normal one qt . filter . My 5.0 Ford will pop the side out of every FL1a that is installed on it as soon as it starts ! I run Mopar V8 , 1/2 qt. size less total force applied and all is well .

  7. Nothing has changed on the car in a few years, other than it sits a lot because of the ****ty weather here. I didn't work on it today, but I did order 2 valve cover gaskets. One for the cover that's on it now, and one for the other cover without breathers. I do like the idea of putting socks or rags around the areas that it could be leaking, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks Tim. Here's the only pictures I have of the engine. It does have a road draft type breather on the crank case, it has a K&N style filter on it. I'm going to do a compression check just to see what it has compared to what it use to have. Probably won't touch it for a few days. 100_1174_zps481a6a2a.jpg 100_1175_zpscc0db13e.jpg 100_1176_zpsa73926fe.jpg 100_1177_zpsc042bd45.jpg 100_1178_zpsd16f7092.jpg

Hopefully the weather takes a nice swing and you have a chance to mess with it. A roll of the dice and it could be 60 deg or 6 inches lol.

  9. I know Tim. It was really windy today, and it's still blowing. Sounds like the house is going to come down.

Your original 50W oil seems too thick for your motor. Depending on your bearing clearances, you should be fine with a 10W40. Check your venting. Sounds like a filter issue.

I don't know this engine. But, if it was a SBC the first thing I'd think of is PCV valve stuck closed? That much oil it maybe blowing out the front or rear crank seal?

Did you ever find the source of your leak?

  13. Not really. It's been to damn cold to drive it. I did put socks around all the breathers, and drove it a short distance, and didn't have any oil on anything. I might be able to drive it on Sunday, it's suppose to be 70, but living here I don't think it will be that nice. Real feel tomorrow at 9 am is 35 degrees, and when it has been warm, it's really windy. I hope to find out something soon. The driving time here is very limited, and I'd like to be able to jump in it and drive it when I can.

You're not still running the heavy oil are you? I run 5-30 in mine, got 50 psi at idle, mines a 1983 2.3 model, nice looking setup you have there.

Been nice enough for a closed car plenty of days so far but your right about Missouri roadster weather. This sunday/Monday is looking favorable hopefully you get s chance to run around :)

  16. hope you fine the problem. I love those motors, my former brother-in-law had one in a Cortina back in the 80's and it was so much fun to drive.......now I need to start a build that I can use one in.

that ****S & now to clean up nice car good luck

  20. Well I didn't get to drive it today. It was low 70's and sunny, but the wind was blowing 25+ MPH. Wind gusts to 40MPH according to to the weather app on my phone. That's not enjoyable to me.
The 50 wt oil is gone, I'm running 15 40wt in it now. The 50 wt has been in it from day one, almost 25 years with no problems. Of course I've changed it a time or two. Maybe one day this week I can get it out.

  21. The last one of those that I ran was still in the original body and when I got it, it leaked terribly where the cam snout stuck out. It leaked like that until it needed a new belt. LOL

If it is building crank case pressure it will blow oil out everywhere, and won't stop until it relieves itself. The problem with a road draft tube is that they really only work @ speed. You have to have a good draft blowing over the end of the tube to create suction, unlike a PCV valve that operates on vacuum.

If I was not leaking and then sprung a leak I would first try and figure out what has changed. if I had made no changes to it then I would start looking for something that is wore out. What we used to do on out old beaters was look for a clean place and follow it up to the leak, the clean motor oil will leave its mark on the motor. The other thing we would do depending on what was available was throw a large sheet of clean newsprint under it or even an old bed sheet and look for the spots. You normally have to be right there when one is really leaking so that you can see where the spots originate then look directly above them.

I bought a 4 cyl iron duke powered '26 and went through about 3-4 qts coming home from Daytona once.
Dipstick was always coming loose too at higher speeds.I mostly ran it local and no oil loss at slower speeds.
Couple of years later I found out the engine had bad rings and blow-by was creating enough crankcase pressure to blow stick out and loose oil there

Nice 2.0 BTW I had a 2.3 in a 29 that was mildly built and surprised a few people

Ryan, not to get off the subject a bit, but I too would be extra pissed if that happened to me, especially after Wix advertises its filters as being "traditional". Talk about underhanded chicken ****s ! !
