Battery location looks good. What's going on with the inner fender well? I'm guessing you are getting rid of some hot air thru there. Any more pictures of how you made that?

 

Those are stock Ford inner fender panels (as far as I know). Henry figured out by 1940 that it helped those water heaters (flatheads) to get the heat out of the engine compartment.

 

The bulge is bigger on this side to allow the battery to sit in the engine compartment. The battery tray bolted to both the frame and firewall. The battery acid fumes ate through most original panels. Before that the battery sat in a shelf in the firewall, under the floor etc. The drivers side had a smaller bulge, so maybe ventilation also.

 

I'm not building the exhaust just yet, but I've been looking for some short lake pipes for about a year. These came up for sale so I jumped. Seller said they were in a speed shop display case for 40 years. Anyway, I had to bolt on a running board and see what they will look like. I dig it.

 

I like it! That is thinking out of the box! And by using even more creativity, you have a very unique setup by bringing the lake pipe out at mid-car. Kind of a bellflower look. I have never seen what you are going to do. I am intent on having open dumps on my 40, with a cut out.

 

I remember those more on shoebox Fords, but I think they'll look good on your sedan.

 

The pipes will be very cool.

 

Are they gonna be functional? Just curious.

 

I'm wonderin' the same thing. If they were open all of the time, it might play hell with the running board covers.

 

Not to mention the chronic "Dirty Whites" out back.

 

Yeah functional, they'll be the exhaust pipes. There's not much room to go up and over the rear end because of where the shocks are mounted. So, I planned for them to exit to the side, this just adds some 'pizzazz'.

 

There's no plan for running board covers on these, they're pretty rough. Even so, I'll leave a gap. We'll see if it's enough. I'm not worried about it.

I'm not that creative. I saw this setup on a black and white picture of a 40 coupe. I think I saved it somewhere...

 

So it will be OK if I steal it from you? I have all new exhaust, and the exit is barley visible. I can't quite remember how far back my mufflers are set. If I could run cut-outs with your set-up, I could show my ass when I please, and keep the before mentioned, potential problems at bay. With the exhaust barley visible, I could present the affect I was running the flathead open.

Oh, I forgot: I need the short lake pipes! I thought for sure I saw them listed on the Night Prowler store page. So I checked and you are right, not available. I checked Speedway, Wurths, Mooneyes, and Honest Charlies. No Luck! I will check around on Rik's CCC.

 

Hey Dan not sure how big of exhaust you intend to run ,but a friend of mine in Colleyville ran 2 1/2 tail pipes over the rear on my 34.

 

Speedway's stainless lake pipes are easily shortened; with pre-planning the seam can be hidden under a hanger so the weld doesn't have to be so perfect.

 

Thanks for the idea,Rich. I am hung up on the obsolete, the small details I remember from my youth and the little pages. Like ribbed lake pipes! Again, they are unavailable. By the time I get that far though, the vendors may have it all readily available again! LOL!

 

I saw ribbed pipe for sale at a vender at the round up! Not sure who it was though so I'm sure that's not to helpfull :/

 

Those would be fairly easy to make. Just need a muffler shop that will work with you and a chrome shop you can afford.

 

Pretty sure that was "Macdonald Handmade". I follow him on Instagram. I was probably going to have him make be a ribbed set, but I came across these first.

@Junior Stock stock I did think about making them myself, but I wanted them chrome, so these saved my both time and $.

nice work--looking good-all my 40's have battery in same place-cut the splash guard to fit then a panel that covers the front and side of battery--no problems in years.

 

Given what hard to find hot rod knick knacks go for they probably aren't that different price wise

 

Thanks, I'll keep the site as reference. I knew the motorcycle guys were using the ribbed exhaust pipe. McDonald is making the ribbed pipe for their use. Man, that was a great score you made!
