I have a crossram intake that I want to use on my Willys pickup. I have a couple questions that I hope someone can help with. I'd like to know what brand it is, it looks like someone ground off the markings and polished it at some point and does anybody know if you can buy the blow out plugs, the person I bought it from wasn't too smooth when he pulled them out. I'm going to clean up the mess and weld the damaged areas then remachine the plug holes. Thanks in advance.
The "blowout plugs" are just casting core plugs, Just replace them with soft plugs from the autoparts. Looks like an M/T the ones he built with the open plenum instead of the 4 holes he marked POWER RAM I don't know if these were the same name. It is an early '60s intake. Just for shits and giggles these were designed to run wide open.
Are you running it on the street at all? or just straight race? If your driving it on the street, and there is no internal connection between intake banks, I would suggest putting a 1 inch open spacer under the carbs and running a hose between the two spacers. This will help sync the vacuum signals between the right and left banks of the motor and make street driving much more pleasant. Did it on my old Edelbrock one and it worked great. made tuning easier as well.
Thanks Beaner. Drive one on the street with out some type of connection between the banks and it makes for crazy shit some times. Before I did that on my cross rammed 66 El Camino it would load up and foul plugs non stop. put that connection in there and it drove way better and after getting the carbs set right rarely fouled plugs.
I agree on it being a M/T, due to the "boxy" appearance of the runners. Too bad someone messed up the core plug holes, it may be difficult to get a good enough, air tight seal. TIG welding them completely closed may be a better approach. I had to have a numbers correct Powerglide for a Lo-Perf 409 in a 63 Impala SS car repaired at one of the extension housing bolt holes to save it, and unless you knew it was done....................I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Thanks for the advice it's been enlightening. I just assumed that the plugs were there to protect the intake and carbs from a backfire. It sounds like I can cut out some aluminum blanks and weld them in to seal the manifold back up. Is that right guys????
Balancing carbs is an art. It is pretty hard to find a balancing manifold for a 2x4. Way easier to tie the plenums and be happy.
It is a Mickey Thompson for sure....that style with the rounded runners is the early style...and the only crossram to my knowledge that does have a balance channel cast into it to connect one bank to the other. The later MTs...with the square corners that resemble most all other crossram save for the staggered carbs...do not have the balance channel....so as far as I know...the only crossram that'll work as is...is the style shown by the op..
I've seen the later MTs with the squared runners that appear to have a balance channel and it was never opened up from the factory....so even though some look like they might have one...they dont.
Good call on the balance channel. I got home from work and checked it out. You can see in the picture I slid a zip tie through so that's one less thing to worry about. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.
