I'd be willing to bet that there's no way to install either of those automatic trannies without cutting the floor. I know for sure you must cut the floor for use with a small block and an auto ...

When you've mocked up the motor and transmission on the frame,i think you should put the body back on the frame.I think thats the only way to figure it out what kind of hump the ****** tunnel will need.

51 was the first year for automatics in both Ford & Mercury, I believe the trans humps are bigger than previous years.

Finn, I believe that will be my best bet. I guess the trans hump will be left out until I get body back on the frame. No big deal, as you can see there is plenty to keep me busy!! Thanks man!

Finished up the firewall and toe boards today. Went with a more slick look. Not sure of the dimensions for the transmission hump yet. Taking Finnrodders advice and waiting until I get the body on the frame and the engine mocked up. Next up is the trunk floor...

Well,if you are going to upgrade the gas tank for a mustang/comet tank,i guess you should make that decision before fabbing the trunk floor pans..
    Keep it up!

s I want to go with the 68 mustang tank. I like the low profile. Only downfall, is its capacity is only 16 gallons. May have to modify it or build a custom tank ??

Well I'm sure this will have some negative repercussions from a few of you guys but...after getting the notch complete , raising my tunnel and getting my 4 link ready to install I have decided to bag my car. I put a ton of research and thought into this decision!! Its the only way that I can achieve my goal of smooth ride, easy steering and super low stance. I am building the car to travel around the US. I want to be as comfortable as possible as I will be spending hours behind the wheel. It will be a fairly expensive endeavor but I want it built right and with quality parts. Don't get me wrong guys Im all about a traditional build and that's where my roots are. This is just a different animal....

Looks like you have been busy with your build. If you want to go the bagged route I say go for it. I do have a couple buddies with non hamb friendly newer bagged trucks and they always seem to have issues with reliability. Not sure if it's just the setup they are running. If you plan on driving cross country a 302/ C4 combo might be a better choice than running the flathead. If you ran into trouble on the road most shops could handle working on a small block ford rather than a flathead. You definitely have some awesome fab skills that I wish I had ! Can't wait to see how your build ends up especially rocking the 4-door !

Thanks man I can't wait either! I have considered the 302 option but just really like the idea of running the old flatly. Either way I am running the C4. I love the four doors man! Always have on a shoebox anyway. By the way what make and size tires are you running on yours?

I'm running Coker cl***ics bias ply in a G78-15. They are the first set of bias ply tires I have ever ran with.... I haven't had any road manner issues with them yet considering how ****py the roads are in CA ! Lol....

People drove flathead Fords cross country pretty often---;) I routinely carry belts, points, condensor, rotor, cap, coil and a couple of spare wires in the toolbox in my old cars.(and a lot more besides)If I were really going on a long trip I would also take a fuel pump and a water pump. Those are certainly the most likely problems and the very things modern "auto parts" stores wont have.Be happy in the knowledge that you CAN fix your car without resource to computers.

Yeah I'm sure I'll stick with my Merc flathead. Just really love the character of them! Guess I'll build a custom tool/parts compartment! And two water pumps!

So I have been making up my ch***is, rear end, suspension and transmission. Now I have a question. Should the flathead motor sit level front to back. The reason I ask is, I have it level, using original front mounts. This puts the tail of my C4 sitting really high. You can see it in the picture below. Am I missing something? Should the motor sit lower in the back? Is there supposed to be a set of rear motor mounts? This is my first shoebox and flathead so please excuse my ignorance...
