History Grandpas el mirage roadster recreation p.r.c

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by paintslinger805, Mar 13, 2016.

  1. image.jpg So here's a question. I now have a 32 steering box and have had a 34. I know the 34 steers better. Can I just change the flanges that bolt to the frame. The pit arm shaft looks the same length. I will measure it all up tomorrow if nobody chimes in

Try reading this thread regarding your steering box questions.

This guy don't just sell parts, nor does he just build a rod and post the pictures.
He made the most complete tutorial seen in the longest time,

There will be some of the info you will find in valuable.

Everything I have read says that you can just swap the flange over from one to the other. The '34 should be 15:1 ratio, which is why they steer better than the 32 box which is 13:1.

Still following and still hooked. You did good. Not only on the body but that flathead looks great. Looking forward to seeing this completed and at Pismo? Hope so. Mark.

Wow, congrats...there's not too many 32 roadster bodies left in the wild. Excited to see it, good luck on the build. JohnnyA

  16. Who or where is a good water pump rebuilder. Flathead pumps???

  17. So here's my Howard's cam spec. The machine shop thinks it's to big for my 268 cubic incher. They are saying I should go with a Winfield A grind. They want to send out the one that came with my motor and have it reground to the A grind. What do all you experts think.y grandpa ran a smith 3/4 race cam. I can't find the specs for that one.

The sector housings (part of the housing with the triangle flange) will interchange but then you will find out that the '34 steering shaft is too long. To do it properly the '34 worm gear must be put onto the '32 shaft.

Here is my tutorial on '32-'4 steering gears. Starts about half way down the page.

I say run as close to Gamps on the cam to recreate the closest sound possible he would remember. The cam has more effect on sound than say 20 some odd CI.
You can go big later after unveiling this sentimental ride to the legend.

I think you are fine with the cam.
    268 degrees are not much.
    I ran a schneider 270 in a 255 ci merc engine .
    Just fine.

But if you want to sell the howard cam , let me know

  24. image.jpg image.jpg Well I got this in the mail today. It's not a Spaulding but Jim kurten was the first one to convert the LZ v12 to a ford v8. Then he taught the Spaulding brothers every thing he knew about ignitions and they were even in business together. So the Spaulding models are basically the same thing. I could just put a Spaulding tag on it but the kurten is a rare piece. I need to change the plug wires to a more era correct huh...

  25. Went down and picked up grandpa for a fun day at the chino air show. Planes of fame air show. He has donated a few bucks to the museum over the years and has been lucky enough to fly in some of the planes there. He has been in the p38, p51, I think he said he's been in 8 or 12 maybe . The p 38 is his favorite one of all. Here's Ggpa pushing his great grand baby's around the air show. Plus a real hot rod motor. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

  26. So I got a few more details. I asked him what his dad thought of him going out and runnin the dry lakes. He said he didn't think he would let him but he talked to him about how everything was safe and cars were inspected and so he didn't mind him going. He said he rembers going out there the first time with his uncle and his uncle had a coupe. He told me his uncle set up a model t coil to the car. He said it was hooked up to the battery, the car and then a cable down to the ground. If you came up and touched the car it would shock the hell out of you as he's laughing. Give you a real good jolt. Like touching a spark plug he says. It was funny. He told me his first car was a 26 t roadster. He says it was a piece of junk. The gear box leaked oil and says he couldent believe his dad let him buy it . He traded it in for a 32 3 window. The one that I showed a picture of in this build, Before he had a licsens he would get in it and coast it down their driveway. Then he had to push it back up to do it all over again. He would push it for a little while then put a rock under the tire. Then push and rock. I asked him what color he would paint his engines and he said red. He says he had chromed the water pumps generator housing and the gen. Clamp. He had a aluminum oil filter that took a toilet paper roll as the filter and that was bolted to the passenger side firewall. He said you had to take paper off it to get it to fit just right. He says it worked really good. He said it had machined circles all the way down it. So I'm guessing that's what's called a bee hive???? He said it had a name that started with a P. But couldent remember it. Pure something he says. I'm thinking pureoilater but I think that's Nhra stuff. Any guess guys???? He said he remembers going on at least two reliability runs. I asked him about prc club jackets and he says they did not have them. He says only the rich kids had club jackets. So if there were jackets made Maybe they got them after he went to Korea.

  27. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg At dinner I showed him this picture from jimmy b. it's a bitchin 32 with a cool top and windows. I asked him if he had windows like this and he said no. He said his top was a hard canvas top that did not fold up. He said he had like wind deflectors made out of canvas but would not keep the rain out. I didn't understand so he drew this picture to show me. Says they were triangle pieces made from the same canvas as the top. They snapped to the windshield frame and to the doors. He said they were like wing windows. But ou of canvas. I didn't think about it then but now wondering how he seen out of the car.

  29. Just saw this thread - what a wonderful opportunity and it is so cool that you have all the history to chase along the way. I didn't read all the posts, but if your engine is a 268, then you're running a 3 3/4 (stock stroke) crankshaft. Any chance you can find a 4" Merc crank to put in it? Is there a reason you're sticking with the 3 3/4 stroke (did Gramps run that)? You'll not have a problem running the F-10 cam - it is quite a bit bigger than the Winfield Cam. I'm not a big fan of the SU-1A . . . just nothing special about it (lots of better stuff out there). I'd put a Potvin 3/8 in this engine if it was mine.

Also, you should think about bringing Gramps out to the El Mirage meet on May 14 -1 5. We'll be running the FlatCad out there - be happy to show him what we're doing, talk flatheads with him, etc.. We'll have a couple motor-homes, shade and plenty of cold drinks - so if he wanted a place to hang out . . . stop on by. Send me a PM if you want more info.
