    Jerry & Doris Johnson's 54 Oldsmobile. 00000367.jpg

Super Customs and Hot Rods magazine was a kool magazine. I'm going to have to dig mine out of the library.

  10. The pink Buick belonged to Gary and Mavis Newman (sic?) of Madrid, Iowa. I agree with you guys about this car making an impact. It did to me as well. I've planned to add this car to my "What Ever Happened To..........? post eventually. Lots of cars to sort through. It is a lot more work than I thought, but it sure is fun! E

  11. Lil E, I just did some searching based on your post and am wondering if it's possibly Jerry Newman? I found mention of a Jerry and Mavis in Madrid, Iowa. I also found a business, Jerry's Cars and Parts in Madrid.

  12. You might be right Sancho. They were interviewed on the '85 Leadsled Spectacular video, and when they were asked their names, Mavis sounded like she said Gary, but it could have been Jerry.
I just re-watched the interview and I listened closer this time and you were right, she did say Jerry. E

Everytime I run into somebody from Madrid I ask about the Buick. I get the same answer. I remember during one of the leadsled shows in Des Moines. He spent the weekend repairing cars. At a very reasonable rate. I remember he was delighted when talking about his pink. Buick in a childrens book with a pink Dinasoar in it. Super Customs and Hot Rods was one of the best short lived magazines ever , along with Tex Smith`s Custom Cars. Larry Spears 57 Ford (Kool 57)was featured in the same Mag as the La Jolla was in.. Now that is a great where are they now story. Did people see Gary (Curly`s) Howards Ford Coupe. I need to ask Ray Bozarth again what happened To Harold`s Buick. Don Knober of the Iowa City owned it at the time the Pic was taken.

I remember the "Raunchy" Merc as another one that I thought was real cool.

  26. Great pics, as always Straykat! I've always dug Bill Moore's "Earth Angel".
I was recently watching my '83 Leadsled Spectacular video doing research for the What Ever Happened To..........? post, and low and behold, there was Bill's sled--but in RED! I had never seen it in red before. It didn't have the connie kit yet, but it did have "Earth Angel" lettered on it. It is on another video as well, in purple, with what looks to be an under construction connie kit on it. Bill has been around for ages, and "Earth Angel" right along with him. He's a fun guy to shoot the breeze with, and hopefully I can get to the Spectacular this year and we can catch up! E

  27. Whew! I've never seen that one before. What a beauty! The Hudson taillights are bitchin'! So is the dead bug in the radiator. Nice to know it is driven! E

I just got off the phone with Bill, I always look forward to talking to him. He is one kool guy. When the Merc was red it had Ed Roth do the pinstripes. It would have been kool to be able to keep them. Bill believes in driving them and needed repainted..... Hope to see ya in Salina.

  29. Bill is a salt-of-the-earth type of guy. Great people.
I'm going to try like crazy to make it to Salina this year. My VW might be sold, and hopefully I can throw together something somewhat worthy of attending the show in. E
