Where in Canada? It is probably going to cost a fortune to get it across the border. If the person buying the engine is close to a border it will be way cheaper to ship it to a shipping outlet on the U.S. side of the border and have the buyer cross and pick it up himself.
^^yes. Check Forward Air. Airport hub shipper. Empty fluids, and engine bag the hell out of it. Leaks WILL cost you $$. Strap it to a pallet. Build a crate. Cheap transcontinental shipper considering. Fast, and insurable. Must have truck. You drop off at hub, shipee picks up at their hub. Good luck. Two engines, two blocks. Used them four times now.
Might try Fastenal 3PL (3rd Party Logistics) to see if they take things into Canada Same requirements; no fluids, must be crated and on a pallet for insurance purposes. It's optional who pays the costs, shipper or receiver. To get a quote, you have to supply your info and the recipient's address, email & phone # ...but that's easy enough to do. Must take to a Fastenal outlet and must be picked at one.
I looked into that a few years ago when I bought the Y Block that Tim McMaster built for me in Visalia California. It was going to be very close to $1000 all said and done. I decided to drive down from Edmonton and picked it up myself, a few days and a nice holiday, a great road trip. It cost me a few dollars more but it was fun. At the border all I paid was tax, it was easy. Edit I should also say that the original plan was to ship my engine to Tim to build for me. That would account for the high total cost, shipping to him and then back. As it turned out he built an engine for sale and I was able to buy it as it was built the way I wanted. Having saved the cost of shipping to California and having budgeted for doing so I just decided to do the road trip and be my own shipper. The trip was absolutely great, seeing parts of the country I had not seen before.
I asked Fastenal about shipping a bare FE block to Surrey BC from US, they said no, and they have a location about 8 miles from my house.
.... sheez' ... BBC 402 block with bare heads, crank, caps, from Dallas to Los Angeles, 2014 for 212 bucks. Forward Air. Home Depot straps $16, engine bags 2, $20 Summit, pallet free, scrap plywood, and one by twos also free.
I live 40 miles from the border -I have a warehouse on the USA side that charges me by the package to receive items I ship to their address with my name on them. UPS in the same town also offers this service - there may be a similar service in a border town near you- I drive over, pick up my stuff and declare it when I cross back over- most I ever pay is the tax on the declared value- a lot of times the Customs guys just say have a good day.
Try shipping to Package Express in Sumas Wa. They have a forklift and charged me $15 to receive and load a new crate motor into my pickup. As far as a transport company to get it from A to B give Mike at Moto Transportation in Surrey a call. Tell him the dali sent you.
I shipped a 348 tri-power from the San Francisco area to Alberta. I used Yellow Freight. No issues at all and they did the brokerage. Allan
