Saw it in Salina last year. You are right, it's beauty is in the "entire package". Everything shows amazing attention to detail. Subtle in a way yet gorgeous.

And deep down inside, you do like writing features. There is no doubt. ;)

Beautiful. You're right, can't attribute it to any one thing, but I think the color sets it apart. Great choice.

I love writing. It's one of my favorite things in the world to do... But, honest to god, I can't stand writing straight features. Hell, I don't like reading them either... I mean, if you've read one - you've read them all.

Me, I like to write stories where the car is kind of the backdrop or just a character in that story. It's just more interesting to me.

That being said, I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority on this deal.

To me the stuff that sets this Merc apart are the solid no-flake paint, the authentic stance, the simple frenching with stock headlight rings, the addition of just a couple odd parts like the dash and taillights, and the RESTRAINT. The simplicity has elegance that candy paint can't give. An over-chopped top would be over the top. He went for the win, not the show.

Alchemy, the use of restraint is a key element in the appeal of the Wolk Merc.
I agree, Ryan, there is just something about this Merc.............

Besides everything said already, David is a super nice, humble and talented guy. I've been a fan of he and his brother's work for many years. Some of their other cars may be familiar, as well as the air cleaners they produce --- http://wolkdesign.net/index.htm

it great the way you lay out the back story for a lead into your crush on this Merc - but, would be nice to see a PB Bunny penciled in the background.

Actually Ryan we are not in love with the Bunny Suit, we are in love with what is filling out the Bunny Suit. A 36 will fill out the top, but a 42 will give the material just enough stretch without exploding out. You mention slab sides, but I see the roundness of the front fenders that carries down the side, a dip in the doors, then all the way to the trunk. No in your face fins and chrome of the 57, just nice subtle shape that you just want to run your hand down.
The headlights, just enough extension from the front sheet metal that gives the body something to follow,,, and something to catch the eyes of the envious.

When I got my '51 I was so excited, I did lots of searching for custom Merc pictures, and I could barely find a handful that I really liked. Tons of cars with too much chop, 6" tunneled headlights, 59 Cadillac taillights tunneled into the quarters, giant plywood center consoles in between head-rested bucket seats, and nearly every one had those body color "smoothie" mirrors on them. Top it off with a front suspension clip that makes the wheels sit flush with the wheelwells and you've got the quintessential Google Search Merc.

This one I like. It's subtle, it's not trying to out-customize the other Mercs. It's clean.

What a beautiful car!...I'd be happy just to pull a chair up to it, and sit and ''look'' at it most of the day!...absolutely mesmerizing!

I checked out the link Nick posted above to Wolk's website, and in the gallery there is one pic of a white chopped Merc built in the 80's. I wonder if this is the same car re-done?

It's gorgeous. In my opinion it's easier to mess up a custom Merc than get it right.

I'm going to use this line on the wife and see what happens "You are a beacon of lust in a sea of familiarity"

Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is one of those times.

Great analogy! Reminds me the first time I saw my now wife like 52 years ago. She was 14 and OK you know the rest of the story. This Merc has it all just right and it is Black. I am more into fender less hot rods than customs but would not mind having this one.

Well I guess it is not Black:confused: Still a nice one:cool:

Kool post of one of my all time favorite Mercs. Saw it in Salina last year and I was blessed that Dave gave me the tour. Wow, love his attention to detail. This was one of my favorite pictures of some of his detail. Dave cut and formed a 51 Ford grill support to fit in front of the radiator. Very few people will ever see this kool piece. Just too kool!

It's definitely nailed the look and substance of an early 1950's custom Merc. Simply a beautiful car. At first, I assumed that it was a restoration of an original 1950's custom.

  20. Gorgeous Merc. What colour is that? Not quite blue, not quite gray? Some photos it looks almost black.

I'm in that minority too, for all the same reasons.

I agree with everything this an has said.

I have always been on the "meh" side of '49-51 Mercs, but there are a few that really ring my bell. I admittedly have even thought of owning one, one or twice, but haven't pulled the trigger on any of them...

In my humble opinion, that's the most perfect example of a '50s chopped Merc I've ever seen. Could've done a thousand things differently, but Dave you've selected a perfect combination of components, modifications, and colors. Everything's right, and nothing's wrong. When I got to the last photo and saw the Cadillac engine--aaah.
Speaking of photos, Tom Davison's, as usual, are equal to the quality of the subject. And Ryan, one excellent piece of writing. Thank god for the minorities. Just one opinion.

I haven't been able to see the car in person yet, but it definitely is a perfect example of a Merc done right. Beautiful car.

It is indeed a well done Merc. I don't feel myself swooning about it, and I don't have any negativity toward it either. It's right, has just enough, as mentioned above was blessed with restraint, and the Caddy engine was the passionate kiss from said bunny. You asked us to admit to ourselves that we feel or felt the need for one. Sorry bud, not me. I want to BUILD ONE, for somebody else, be involved in the planning, and with no shame in my game get the back up from whomever I need. To have and to hold til zero oil pressure? Nope. Seriously, no. C'mon, quit lookin at me like that, no. No. NO! Ok I mean it this time, no...
