Muncie input shaft too worn?

    I picked up an M20 yesterday for a pretty good deal. Gears and synchros looked pretty good but the input shaft looks a little worn. What do you guys think? Should this be replaced before i use the transmission? ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1462703374.613769.jpg
     
  2. That's bad,,turn it down and make a bushing to fit.
    How is the mainshaft front bearing?

    This is the right answer (above) or just swap out with a better shaft. If you don't want to disassemble the trans just mic the pilot up and make a custom pilot bushing. Should be able to find a Oilite bushing that's close then dial it in.

    If your not going to replace it & I would, which isn't that hard at all. I'm betting the input shaft wobbles quite a bit which is common place. Fixing the wobble only involves removing the front cover and "carefully" tilting it down in the front to keep the fat needle rollers from falling down into the case. Once it's out you can put a dorman .030 shim # 730-013 behind the input bearing which comes out as part of the input shaft & the shim will eliminate tons of input wobble & as a result the input teeth will engauge deeper into the dog collar. I've seen some need 2 shims. Also, get a tube of blue marine grease for boat trailer bearings to use on the fat needle rollers when putting them in to keep them put on reassembly. Easy job & doesn't require major disassembly. Be sure to use a bronze pilot bushing too dorman # 690-014 . This should keep whatever you choose to fix square with the world. Flux

    You now have a neat paper weight.
    If that is an early Muncie with the 7/8 in. cluster shaft, better check for wobble in the case, which they are known for.

    I hate to say it.... when ever we get these Muncies and Borg Warner T-10s in the shop I almost always recommend the customer go buy one of those new T-10s or other new transmissions. Most of the parts are available to repair the old transmission.A lot of times the case is worn as well(as has been previously stated).By the time you buy new parts,you're better off just buying a new unit.
