  1. That's good for a giggle, there used to be (maybe still is) a guy here in town that specialized in Corvette restoration paint. he was one guy in the nation that could duplicate the orange peel and runs that it either would have or came with. he had one in his shop one time that one of the fellas said I had to go see, it had a run under an inspectors mark, they had photographic proof. he duplicated the run exactly then put the inspectors mark on it just like the photo.

  6. the local shows are one thing the concourse judged shows are another. i have restored several harleys and indians to concourse condition. the supposed experts don't even agree on whats right. several times i had bikes judged and was told i had a issue with a part. usually finish related. parkarised vs cad plated type things. i would change the part take it to another show. the judge would say the part i had just changed was incorrect. after a few of these incidents i would bring both sets of parts to the show and when the judging started i asked the judge what way we were going today. then show them all of the spare parts. a friend of mine worked for chrysler on the line late 60s to early 70s. he said when they ran out of parts from a supplier they didn't stop the line. they put on what ever was in the parts bin. they got parts from a different suppliers. he said it happened all the time and there are more correct cars driving around that are supposedly incorrect due to this. they judge by the year when in reality the cars could change from the factory by the day or hour.

Just build your car at home to a level that will compete with the pro built cars you're concerned with. If your attention to detail is acute enough to see the difference when you compare your car to a pro build, then it's acute enough to build/finish to that level.

This is true. You know what sharpened my building? Building model cars mostly in 1/25 scale. I got back into it in 1995, was awed by the guys walking off with the loot in contests... shit... I can do that too. By 1999 I was winning contests, had my cars in all the model car magazines up through 2011.

What I learned there, building a real nice model car, gave me the skills to apply it to a real car. My Ford is going to pretty much be a driver, but some of it is up to a show car level.

  13. Judging is helping you improve your car according to their standards, that's all! As an ACD former member I've seen "Judging". I'm for "Peoples Choice" only. Well one more thing owners clothing, nobody with an old car should show up in Bermuda shorts and sandals unless they're a good looking lady! Long pants and shirts with no printing is the deal! That way you avoid the "I'm old tired and hot, might have been Hep 50 years ago look" HAHAHahahah!!!!

What difference does it make to you if you don't want the awards anyway?

When I read the part about your trophy at your High School last year, I checked your join date and thought this guy sure is having trouble graduating. Then I saw what you did for a job.

my 2 cents... best real steel car should win period. Problem I see at a lot of shows around my area is, trophies goes to buddies or people they feel they owe something to for showing up. This is BS but, it happens none the less. What burns my ass more than professional build vs. home built is allowing a fiberglass kit car to be judged with real steel. A local show recently awarded a fiberglass sedan top honors over more than a dozen very nice steel cars. Fiberglass should be in a replica class only!

Did you ever stop to think perhaps the fiberglass car was of a higher quality than the "steel" cars. I been in this for a long time, since the 60's and it never ceases to amaze me the complaining about what cars are, what they are made out of, and why didn't I get my $3 trophy. I will probably piss off a bunch of folks here but honestly, if you are in this hobby for the accolades you can get, you are sure as hell in it for the wrong reason. But, that's my take. Just remember what a hobby is, and don't cloud it with obsession. The bottom line is to have fun with old cars and quit being "whiny little babies".

No I didn't because it is a replica period. People buy glass bodied cars knowing damn well they are fiberglass then spend the rest of the time denying it's fiberglass. They get upset when people call them out or when they continuously lose at shows, that is what this thread is about, correct? Judging at car shows? Above is a perfect example. I also take offense to the "whiny little babies" comment. Maybe the accolades people are getting is for the recognition of the hard work they put into building their cars vs. hitting buy it now on ebay. unbelievable...

So fiberglass cars are not ok, hitting buy it now on ebay is not ok. What about people who, instead of building their own frame, have one built and shipped to them? Shouldn't people who actually build their entire car themselves, including the frame, get awards over those who buy one from a supplier? Where does one draw the line? And who gets to decide who draws the line? You? Me? Donald Duck?

  23. What does everyone think of judging by participants only, and only for “Best GM / Ford / Mopar? I’m talking about small local shows, not big shows with deep pocket sponsors.

Try passing off a fiberglass replica of an Auburn, Cord or Duesenburg as an original!!! Those people will skin you alive!!! All fiberglass aftermarket bodies are replicas and should be listed as follows: 1932 Ford roadster fiberglass replica.

I've never been interested in trophies, I know a couple of guys that will only go to shows with trophies, not my thing but to each his own. That being said, at our local cruise night, a guy started showing up with his tuner and started displaying all his trophies in front of his car. A buddy of mine and I went hit up all the thrift shops and bought about 30 trophies, bowling, lacrosse, hockey, figure skating and set them all up in front of our cars, the guy with tuner didn't show up again.
