Sorry if this is OT but just wondering why the high cost for an 8 track player that's "untested' "not sure if it works" for 300-400 dollars. I would like one for my car cause I got a bunch of 8 tracks from my Dad. Hell its damn near cheaper just to get a current stereo setup and let the tapes set in the box on my shelf in the garage. would anyone like to chime in?

  2. I don't know where you shop I find them all the time for less that 20 bucks. Look in thrift stores and flea markets.

  3. I think I still have a couple of 8 track players in my swap meet stuff. HRP

  4. You may have the same curse I seem to have; as soon as I decide I want a specific part, everyone else decides they need it too and the folks that got'em decide they're made of gold!

  5. Same here. I have several of them and usually pay between 2 to 10 bucks. Usually the only thing that breaks on them is the drive rubber band inside. I even bought an 8 track recorder for $20 last year, that way I can record ABBA over my J. Cash 8 tracks ;)

  6. I bought one at a thrift store a couple of year back for a guy who was restoring his high school car. 7 bucks and it came with a brandy new rubber band.

I got a'70s stereo one of those that was one piece that had the tape deck, turn table and radio that the missus got at a yard sale for 5 bucks. They wanted more for it but she told them that she would take the carrying case full of county and western music cassets along with it if they would meet her price. People are so dumb. LOL

Eventually I am going to set it up in the garage.

Those may be some of the ones that were factory or dealer installed.
Kind of like those tissue dispensers with oem logos on them, they have gotten quite collectable.

yeah, what DDDenny said. I sold an untested 8 track that fit a 1970 Olds 442 for like 300 bucks a few years back. paid 5 bucks for it at a swap meet since 8 tracks are junk.

People years ago threw out the original 8 track radios, rims, air cleaners, etc for their cars but now people want those hard to find original items when restoring a car and they can bring good money on those auction sites.

yes, you can still get them cheap if you look around if you are not after a certain period correct one.

Only the factory ones are worth that kind of money. To a guy restoring a '70 Challenger or a GTO Judge or something, a factory AM/FM/8 track is a very hard to find piece and they can be restored if they don't work.

Old aftermarket ones are really cheap, I've got a stack of them if you need one for $20. I've got a Quadraphonic one that I'm holding onto to put into something. Quad tapes are hard to find but they give an incredible effect, music had to be specially recorded in Quad to make it work. Better than "surround sound".

It depends if you are looking for oem one or an aftermarket one. The one for my 63 nova I bought from a guy at the swap meet for $1 and a couple of days after that another guy gave me one(both are aftermarket). The thing I have been looking for that has gone skyhigh and hard to find are those stupid fm convertors to hook to my original am radio. I have only seen one at the swaps and he wanted $75 untested.

RuttRho, recording over Johnny Cash? Bad juju that!

  13. Of course I was joking, lol. It does allow me to buy any 8track tape and put the music I want to listen to. Cash tapes are hard to find, but polka is easy, and I can't dance.

I hung onto my 8-track players, in a box packed away in the garage, with a suitcase carrier for The Eagles, Beach Boys and Webb Pierce...never thought they'd come around again to be sure, but I had so much history with them. Hated to just get rid of them. I always liked 8-tracks, and had some awesome skill in jiggling the matchbooks into the odd corner location to play correctly without warble & fade-out sounds...."good times!!!";):D:D

  24. You are absolutely correct all this is really good for is remembering good times and we damned sure had them..

My first stereo was actually a 4 track, I gave one of the Sosch kids 5 bucks for it and 4 tapes. They were not cool any more.

I have an 8 track under dash pioneer supertuner in my off topic 66 chevelle. I shove a boston tape in that thing and it is just like I am back in high school!! ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1462993894.287666.jpg

It's funny this came up, I drove the Olds to work yesterday. Parked it with the top down and someone took my Boston 8 track tape off the passenger seat. The humanity. If the OP has the second Boston album on 8 track I would be interested.

  27. KA-CHUNK! don't forget to get the anti theft slide out for under dash mounting. :)

Mine is OT and factory Moriarity, but works well (better when it had a tape in it). Those Pioneer Super Tuners with the round FM dial can bring the dollars, hang on to it.

I have heard stories from the 70s of players encased in metal shrouds bolted under the seats to the floor. This was done so they were hidden and harder to steal. I have also heard people would cut the floors out to steal them.
