History Grandpas el mirage roadster recreation p.r.c

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by paintslinger805, Mar 13, 2016.

  1. I was bummed to see it had no dash. This guy tom had 2 32 roadsters to make one nice one. The other one was channeled so he got this one for the floor he didn't want a channeled car. He sent them to a body shop in stockton ca. And the owner ended up on drugs and sold everyone's cars he was working on for drugs. Crazy sad story so this car was a memory piece to look at everyday. He says the other body was almost perfect just didn't want a channeled car. The guy also sold all his parts.

  4. Lol I just set it on top. I have to take out the firewall. The firewall I already had is mint so I think I'm gonna change it out. Plus Wyatt aka runnin shine needs a left firewall foot. So I'm gonna cut a foot off for him. And send it plus other parts he needs. I think mike from American pickers only payed 2500 for his 32 roadster. He's a better dicker than I am. And I always buy lotto tickets and inever win nothing so maybe if we go halfs I can win alittle too.

They still make this stuff, it's not hard to find. Several people sell it:

That car was meant for you. Glad it found its way home and will be recreating your grandpa's car. Amazing what is still out there.

When I see HyperSonic on the side in this pic... My brain for a moment believes you actually may have tracked down Grampa Elmer's body. Is this at all possible or we'll never know?

You could ask Dale if he has any left. He's the reason I bought mine, I mean yours.

  11. We will never know. I think pat gahnal has it. He bought his car from a guy in Pasadena that had it since the 50s. My grandpa sold the body to one guy and the motor and trans to another. Pats had an auburn dash when he bought it and I also belive it was in dark grey primer. Same as what grandpa had. Iv always thought maybe it changed hands once before the guy that pat bought his from. I belive pats car was also a coloume shift when he got it. But their were other guys with this set up so.... Only if my grandpa could find an old registration card we would know. I read pats build of the car and it's probly not but it's fun to think so. I just hope where ever it is it's still driving and when it meets up with mine they will come to life like herbie.

It sure looks at home setting on the frame at long last.........Now this build is going to get more interesting as if that is even possible. It has had every ones attention from the start.......Can't wait for the next round.......Has Gramps seen it yet?

  13. Yea it's at home now for sure. I woke this morning and looked into my garage and it was really there so I know I'm not dreaming. TROG or bust...

  14. I just finished all 17{so far} pages. All I can say is the way this is coming together... THIS is a cosmic thing happening here. From finding out by "accident" that your gramps was an old school lakes racer, to finding all these bits and pieces of history, to finding all the right parts...BOTH your stars and planets have aligned!!! GO! Get that lotto ticket !:D

Not too much longer to see this guy look just like that again. What a happy man.
Bruce any knowledge about the seat figured out? Color, stock, home made, modified, or donor car?
Have you shaken up the dark grey lacquer primer yet? Do you want me to mail you a paint gun that I could have wired up to work with Skype or FaceTime? When your still sleeping I could have four hours of spray time in while sitting on my couch. Lol

  18. Well I got the old firewall out and got the body to line up. It lines up with every body mount hole exept the two that bolt down in the centers on the firewall feet. Looks as if the cowl is tweaked alittle. So I'm gonna porter power her into shape. This car is gonna kill me since I'm a body and paint guy. I really just want to put it together and drive it but then the painter comes out and says hey do it right. We will see what she looks like after this weekend. I can get a lot done in two full days. image.jpg image.jpg

  19. It was a stock seat pillow top tuck and roll type seat. But I have never asked him what color good call Wyatt. I think I'm gonna just hit it with 80 grit on the inside and use por 15 I have never used it but everyone says it's good. Or maybe I will blast it not sure yet. It's 80 years old so I may just leave all the pits and scars on the inside. That way people can complain how i didn't do this or didn't do that. It was built to drive back then it's no different now right. I could spend years making it show perfect or I can get her ready for trog. That's the way I see. Plus I can always say hey where's yours cuz mines right here. You know how haters be hatin. Plus I really want it to look it's age. I'm not putting fake boobs on this 80 year old.

I need some side shots for my Elmer-age fix. ;) This is getting pretty exciting Bruce, It's like reading the best car magazines Vintage Tin Section and the story just keeps getting better!!!! Anxious to hear what Elmer thinks and feels knowing that his grandson is building a tribute to his everlasting legacy as a Pasadena Roadster Club Member and Hot Rodder who has given the County of Los Angeles his many years of service though out his career as a Public Servant.
Thanks Bruce for letting me share in the dream, vision and now reality of bringing back the Elmer-age 32 Roadster…..

  21. Kevin,
Thank you for being interested in this hole journey. All the talks on the phone to meeting up and going for a roadster ride to meeting up and giving grandpa a ride has meant a lot. You've been the only one to RETURN my calls in southern cal. Shame on everyone else. It just gos to show what you can do when you put your mind to it. I know everytime iv called you and said hey I just found this or that, you saying to yourself are you shittin me this guy is in fire. And a lot of the fire has come from you as to keep me hunting insted of giving up, since we both know there's to many 32 hoaders out there and at times iv felt like giving up after talking to guys who have 10 of everything but OH I can't get rid of it because ONE day. It's always the OH one day. I will just say this, if all you hoaders got rid of only 30 percent of your hoard There would be a lot more cars hitting the streets. That's what hotroding should be about. As always thank you Kevin and you bet your ass you will be there when gramps gets the first ride.

    Bruce,
Thank you, This was a great read to wake up to. As you know I'm really passionate about the whole Hot Rod way of life. This actually stems from the being a little guy and for some unknown reason liking the "Old Fashioned Cars" better than late models. I carry that all the way through everything that I do.
Upon meeting you and Elmer, I was intrigued by the history of what he experienced as a young Hot Rodder in Pasadena (Which is still ripe, albeit we're much older);). When you first relayed the story of how you found out that he was one of the guys who ran the lakes, was in a club and had a pretty lively deuce, I felt that this guy is going to repeat history. Well that's what you're doing and Elmer will get to enjoy a deuce once again.

I know that I've told you about my 29 Roadster that ran about the same time that your Grandfather ran. We with the help of Jim Miller-SCTA, The HAMB and some programs that were posted here by h. Gasser I felt inspired to hunt down the builder of my 29 which I already knew the name of as provided to me by a fellow PRC member (Eric Loe),
Well I found that the builder had passed away in 1993, but his son was around and knew the history of the car(s). He has the trophies and timing tags. I just got in touch with him and he's pretty excited to see and hear about his dad's Old 265B.

This may come up perhaps as a thread of its own as I don't want to hi- jack this thread ;). I just wanted you to know that this helps me out as well.

    Sincerely,
    Kevin image.jpg

  23. Well Kevin this internet thing is really special. We are finding out things that we could of not without the internet. Hell when I seen pictures posted by jimmy B of my grandpas car and the fact that he lives in Australia and bought the pictures off eBay. That's just mind blowing. It's guys like jimmy b that are so into this history that gives guys like me a chance to do a recreation. With out his picture I wouldn't of really know what the back of the car looked like. My grandpa also had a 32 3 window so he gets the two mixed up from time to time as to what parts were on what car. That's why with pictures we know for sure.

  24. Does anybody have any original body mount bolts. Or pictures of what the bolts look like?? Are they carriage bolts or just round heads???? Anybody got a seat or a dash or a rumble deck lid handle with key. How about some 41 chevy tail lights. Anybody anybody. Hellooooooooo come on back to me now meow.

    Bruce,
I have been following your thread. I've subscribed and am enjoying your progress.
You can get all the fasteners you need here: http://www.fordscript.com/ford_bolts/index.html Page 42 in the "V-8" catalog.
Roy's a real nice guy and helpful.

  26. Before I King Kong on this cowl are there spacers here or does the cowl suppose to sit all the way down on the firewall foot. The top by the cowl vent is sitting on the firewall and there's about 1" space here??

If you are talking about the bracket that is riveted onto the lower cowl, that is supposed to be up off the chassis. You tighten it down to pull the cowl tight onto the firewall seal but it should never actually get down to the frame.

Here's a picture to make it clearer ...

  29. Thanks simon. I was just texted back and forth with cyclone Kevin and before I got it typed out he said there was supposed to be a spring in there and I was thinking back to when I worked at a hotrod shop and I was telling myself maybe there is a tension spring for the gasket before Kevin text me that. The cowl was alittle tweaked and the drivers door was about an
1-1/2 over lapped so I got out the monkey stick and put her in her place now I got the door lined up. It would open and close if the latches weren't rusted closed. Time for torch and lots of cans of rust buster...
