Krohn, Parmenter & Rue TF (chrysler)

 

"Looks like Jerry Verheul had the Sweet 16 singing this day at Arlington. This car began its life as a blown sbChevy-powered fueler for the remarkable team of Warren & Coburn, but was revamped into this much longer unblown twin. Dave Weiss booted it very capably to A/FD records and even a Top Fuel win or two, depending on what was available on any given weekend. The car was found in southern Oregon some years ago and a well-meaning young man really intended to restore it properly. He ended up letting it go to the right people and now it has been fully restored and is currently on display at the World of Speed in Wilsonville. Rich Carlson Photo (but a bad scan)"

"I wasn't at this race at Puyallup (don't remember why not) but I was at Arlington the next day for the very same match race. This is the era I love so much; tire smokin' fuelers, dozens of gassers and the evolving funny car scene. It was great! This is Dick Landy with a big load of nitro in his stretched Dart agains Joe Davis in the Colt 45 blown sbChevy-powered Mustang on methanol. All three matches at Arlington went about like this, so I'll assume this was about the same with Landy powering away. Did I previously mention what a cool place Puyallup was to view dragracing? So there's a taste of Pacific Northwest drag racing in the 1960's!THANKS TO FLYN' PHIL ELLIOT, drag historian (HE WAS THERE) and colorful character from the 60's to the present!!
Puyallup, Arlington, Woodburn, Balboa......all within a relatively short distance of each other.
A TON of top fuel cars, guys went from track to track from April or so to October. In summer, lots of California cars made the trek. My first race with my Dad was to see Prudhomme in the Hawaiian take on the locals!

Jack's touring never had an Olds engine. The Flathead was replaced by the injected 354 Chrysler out of Frank Cannon's T-Bird. In 61, Slo-Poks member Nick Nicholson teamed with Jack and used Nick's Blown Gas Hemi, to set the AA/SR record that year.

 

Skeans & Pickering A/MR, won the Nationals ( beating Ray Godman) and set the record as well. The Slo-Poks as a club, had the most competitive upper class cars in the Northwest !

How about a little Madras love.

 

I have heard about his FB Page, but I don't have access. I used to see Phil at the Nostalgia Drags, he was always good to Tom Willford and I. Maybe I can get locate his email and make connection with him.

 

He must have been down there looking for 33-36 Willys parts. He was a tough competitor in the bracket racing in the 70's, I was one of his victims, more than once !

 

This one has always puzzled me...looks like a blown wedge MoPar, but not entirely sure..at Pomona, early '60s

Steve Porter, top, in the Olds fueler vs Leland Kolb...the Porter & Ries car was strong, but the Olds ultimately proved inadequate for big nitro loads...Steve and Herb Ries ultimately went their separate ways and Herb later fielded a blown Chrysler fueler on his own....Leland Kolb's racing experience dates back to the early '50s, started in roadsters and moved up to a rear-engined top fuel car....good guy.

Pretty much posted all I had on the Great Oregon Racers thread. Woodburn, PIR and Madras don't value their heritage, they think history is the 90's, or LAST WEEK!
Strips throughout the country have stuff, but not those guys!

 

Straight sixes are just COOL!
At Woodburn, Ringer & Saunders ran a very similar car (Buick) in D/D before their more famous twin Tempest four. Won a LOT too!

 

Except that's a straight Eight Gary.
