Technical 59 Coronet engine id

Anybody know an easy way to id the engine. Was the 324 red ram a hemi that year? Its a v8 so either 324 or 383. Friend of a friend has one, might get lucky.

It won't be a Hemi.... The 383 will have a front-mount distributor, the 326 will have a rear-mount and is a member of the 'A' family with poly heads.

 

thanks the picture he sent does not show a front distributor, so at least that question is answered.

Show us the pic, the poly is easy to tell by the saw tooth rocker covers.

 

Not too many options for 59 and the B&RB have been eliminated......
The A series engines will have the ID code stamped on the front of the block just below the head gasket on the driver side. If there is nothing stamped it could be a service replacement block/engine...no big deal.

Only the D500 had the 383 for Dodge in '59. I thought the base came with 325ci. How about a pic of the '59 car. I have 3 '59 Coronet's. 1 D500 2dr ht and (2) 4dr sedans with flatheads and std trans. I need to sell one of the sedans

 

The 1959 engines for Dodge were the L-head inline six, the 326 c.i., 361 c.i. and the 383 c.i.

 

The 361 and 383 were both B/RBs right? The 383 would have been called a Golden Lion as I recall, or was that a Plymouth motor?.

 

The RB version of the 383, was a Chrysler engine; The Golden Lion.
The 326 is an A series engine, not to be confused with the 325 SRS which was gone in '58; last used in the Dodge.
The 350 'B' engine was a '58 only, followed by the 361 in '59.

Thanks I am fond of the old RB motors but I can never keep them straight. The tall deck 383 is cool maybe because its different. LOL The 413 was an RB too wasn't it?

 

My 58 has the 325 Poly, saw tooth valve covers.
