My roadster has seen many changes. These didn't last too long. Like around the block once. They just bounced.

Fred, who knows what I was thinking. Pretty early in the finished build (early '90s). Look how dark my hair was. "growing pains"

Gary, good choice I like those bodies and none of us have the slim trim bodies we used to. "No offense". Their was a flathead powered yellow Dodge bucket running around the Bay Area rod shows in the mid '60s. Three of us piled in it for a food run from setup at a Richmond show then. But then all three of us probably didn't add up to much over 300 lbs. then.

  11. Those extra few inches would be very welcome inside my T. :D

Well, I mounted up my new rear tires yesterday. They replaced the Hurst cheater slicks that I couldn't get balanced. I'll take it for a highway drive later today to make sure that all is well.

They are Mastercraft 265/75R15s. With 20lbs of air, they measure 29.5" tall. It was hard finding tires in that size without big side lugs.
I just took the daughter for a ride. It rides a lot better. I'll hit the highway on the way to work tomorrow and see how it does.

  20. Great roadster but the Ackerman is all up the shit, you can actually see the outside tire toeing in on the curves. JW

Ackerman is always messed up when tie rod is IN FRONT of kingpins...with a straight axle.

    Most won't ac-know-ledge it.

  22. That is incorrect, the arms need to be moved out toward the backing plates, same principle with the line from the rear axle centre, through the king pin and the through the tie rod end centre. JW

The car is an old Prowlers car and is currently on display at Bill Smith's museum in Lincoln Neb. At least it was last Tuesday
    when I was there.

It might be incorrect but doing what you said isn't easy to get done properly and even then I have always disliked how it looks.

  25. How can you ruin the looks by bending them out to where they SHOULD be.
When that setup turn a tight corner one tire WILL break traction, but hey it looks good, not to me. JW

I simply mean that having the tie rod out in front of the axle just looks wrong to me regardless.

Bad ackerman shows you couldn't be bothered/didn't know to design your frt. suspension properly...

  28. Reminds me of a problem my friend had with his T. Mid '70s he bought a shortened T touring, nailhead, '39 trans, banjo rear; "updated" to the latest style with psychedelic paint and "indy" tires (remember them?). Drove it home and found out the back wheels wouldn't fit thru the garage door. We just about died laughing; wish we would have had cell phone cameras back then.

How long do the have ta be on a 100 inch wheelbase car? A foot long?

    Show me.
I understand ackerman. When I was young: we called it a suicide front end, 1. Because the first thing damaged was the tie rod.
    2. Because of the ill-handling mess it created.

Its still done, alot, just Not in my shop.

A "suicide" frt. end refers to the axle being moved out from under the spring / frame, thus , if something in the suspension breaks the frame will drop to the ground. AFAIK , it doesn't directly refer to the tie-rod....
