That is going to be one nice truck when your done Dave . You can see the attention to detail all through your thread . Everything is so neat and tidy and clean . Very nice job . Keep it up, were all watching with anticipation !
Thank you Andy. This is my first attempt at restoring a vehicle and I've definitely made some mistakes along the way but I'm learning.
Had some more progress. I fixed the badly rusted running board mounts. Instead of trying to bend some flat sheet steel I remembered I had some old fender braces so I used those to fix the running board mounts. Also, I mounted the freshly painted doors and mirrors.
Worked on fixing the cowl vent. It had a nice rusty hole in it so I cut that out and made a patch panel. I need to get rid of the surface rust between the panels before I weld in the patch.
I got the inner fenders back today. The engine side is nice and shiney. The fender well side is coated in herculiner.
Here are a few pics with the inner fenders mounted. I took the grille, outer fenders and a bunch of other items to the painter so I should start getting those parts back within the next few weeks.
Looking good. I like those wheels and the color looks like the original color of mine. Cab an bonnet (hood) would have been that color with the front guards (fenders) being black along with the running boards.
I've been contemplating doing the almost same color scheme for my truck build. But going dark red cab, bonnet and grill, but going dark blue on the front wings, rear fenders and front. So I'm looking forward to see this in paint.
Your 48 is looking more yummy every time that I check out your build. Thanks for posting. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
Thanks HOTFR8. The original color of this F4 was a brighter red but I really like this darker reddish maroon. I know what you mean regarding the fenders being black, I've seen pictures of these trucks painted that way. It's not my favorite but it looks nice. Thanks, it should be close now. I'm going to leave the fenders off until I'm done wiring the truck and such. I really hate the thought of leaning over those freshly painted fenders. Thanks woodbutcher. It's very exciting to see the picture in my head become reality. If any one wants the paint code just let me know and I'll get it from the painter.
While I am posting photos here is how I saved the running boards paint. They are painted in the color but with stone chip finish and then the rubber glued on the raised sections. The rubber is the same used on the side trim or wheel arch moulding.
Most welcome. I hope you can use the idea for the running boards. Here is a better photo of my F4 and this photo was used on a biscuit tin a couple of years ago.
That is a cool truck, what is that on the rear? And I wonder about the seats? But all in all a Very nice looking truck!
Just a little off topic for the HAMB as it has a 6BT Cummins with C6 Auto with full manual shift kit, US Gear overdrive, Peterbilt Sleeper and the back is set up like a semi truck. The seats are a racing seat.
I did not respond to that as I am not here to take HiVolts topic off topic. Mind you his truck and the colors I think are just so traditional looking I am loving it. All I want to do is share a few tips so we see his truck on the road sooner. I know he is and yes it works as I have broken many bolts holding it in place whilst towing the trailer. So yes it does work and the down force from it proves so when we have broken hi tensile bolts.
Sharing ideas is what it's all about. I like reading and seeing how you guys solve various problems too. Thanks Dave
That is one of the great things about the HAMB seeing how some one else resolves a problem whilst working on a vehicle. Not sure where the idea came from to put the rubber strips on the running board but I can tell you it has sure saved me a lot of work looking after the paint. If you did it on black running boards you would not see them. Mind you I have got some great ideas from this topic as well.
Well, I put the front clip on today and moved the truck back to my garage to finish it. I'll probably take the fenders back off when I start wiring it as I hate the thought of leaning on fresh paint, even if I have a cover over it.
Good Grief, Dave! My ancient old hot rod eyes spotted the tape around the cab upper quarters, and I thought: "Land sakes, all that paint work and now he's gonna chop it?" Then I saw it was holdin' the doors shut. Whew!
Just discovered this.forum as we recently picked up a 1950 F1. Looks same condition as this one so lots of spate time reading. Out donor motor will be something unusual...so will share later. This is to mark this thread for my easy find. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337Z using Tapatalk
HaHa! Yeah, the tape holding the doors closed does look like a chop line. Maybe next time. ;-) Good luck with your '50! If there's info I can share/pass on just let me know.
