Anybody ever hear about Ford having an experimental automatic 2 speed transmission for the V8 - 60hp flathead engine ?
The V8 60 was not a powerful motor and a 2 speed auto would have been hopeless. The first automatic offered by Ford was called "Liquimatic". A few Lincolns and Mercuries got them in 1942 but it was a dud. All were recalled. Lincoln offered the GM Hydramatic, then in 1951 they got their own automatic in Fords and Mercuries. So there were some flatheads with automatics from the factory, but not prewar, not V8 60s and not 2 speeds.
Aww.... but they're so damned cute. Man, that's a wild thing. I hope someone on here can fill us in on what/when/why.
It looks like a (small) boat engine. That cylinder at the front looks like a starter generator. Any idea what the tag says?

It still has side exhaust ports too. Someone wrote an article saying it was a turbo charger on the front, which I doubt, as that is the starter on the front. Really not sure What is going on there
That's not a 60. It's a Gentry V8. Made in SoCal. Custom block that used stock T internals, etc. Not sure how the rods and crank worked together
