I totally get the age feel, as in look and "feel".

But if he ran a Auburn dash, that would really set the tone. And if the insert is repop and the gauges old, it should feel right. But the other way around would make it fall on its ass, IMHO.

But if you are unsure what he ran, or he ran multiple setups, then a 32 with the gauges in center would make it possible to run an auburn later.

But I think all modern/new retro gauges looks just wrong, but it might be because they are Retro, not EP (Era Perfect) or old.
    Just my 2 cent.

  2. Plus if I don't do the 4000 auburn I will be able to say I don't even have 17 grand into the running and driving holy grail 32 duece all original hoarders dream hotrod of all hotrods. That would be cool because there's no way I could be building this car for much more. Iv really been blessed to be able to build this car and I am really lucky and I do know that so don't think I don't appreciate it with all my ranting it just does to show that you still can build a less than 20 grand original car. And that's why I'm not all hush hush about how much I'm spending because I want this to inspirer young guys who say man if he did it I can do it. Iv never been on a vacation I bust my ass everyday to give my family what they want and this car is the hotrod gods giving back and it's not just for me it's for everyone to injoy. I got it out of that junk yard to share with the world. You see my kids playing in it like a jungle jim and if any of you or your kids see it I expect them do the same. You will never see one of those don't touch stickers in my car and you will never see it parked next to any car that does. I want everyone to injoy it, sit in it, take pictures in it and share those pictures.

I wouldn't be caught dead in that old pile of junk, especially without a original Auburn dash!!!

  4. Well Volvo my hole thing about recreating his car was to see, hear and feel the car the same as he did. And also for him to get in it and take him right back to 1948. That's why I really don't want any aftermarket parts and now since I did find an original body I need it to stay from the time so it stays a piece of history. He had a 32 3 window so sometimes he gets what parts he had mixed up. He remembers having his fuel hand pump on the left side of his steering coloume with a fuel gauge and fuel pressure gauge. He said he ran duel temp gauges one for each head so I don't think he had the auburn in the 3 window. Plus he says he had a gas tank up under the dash for the high octane fuel they used when racing. So there could not have been a 32 dash tunnel. So I'm pretty sure the auburn was in the roadster. I didn't want to tell everyone about the dual temp gauges because I didn't want everyone to go right out and copy cat it before I did but then someone put a thread up about duel temp. Gauges . I told Wyatt about it before that came up in a pm but now I see it was a common thing. And your 100% right about the must do auburn dash. I just have all this spinning around in my head but after I finish the motor and save up some bucks there will be an auburn in it.

    Okay I see.
Run you gauges in a Auburn configuration in the 32 dash and let it evolve. So you and Elmer can get roaring down memory lane ASAP, hypersonic speed.

So when you do find that dash panel later, go swap it in.
Then it will be at least two or three paychecks down the road, and out of the build budget. [emoji41][emoji106]

  7. I just added up the parts list for the motor and wowzers. I'm gonna have to sell some of my goodies to afford this motor. It's going to be one badass motor though. Like my grandpas says I better start collecting ring and pinions and u joints and transmission gears. I'm sure something's gonna break. He told me about how he use to dump the clutch and nail it he would pop teeth off his ring gears so he became an expert at changing those out.

  8. Yep - it all adds up super fast when you start writing down all the details. I always say, it takes three times as long and twice the money as our original plan (and that is doing good!).

But I also say, if we truly knew how much time and money was going to be put into these things - most of us would never start one! You have to be an optimist to HotRod (my take!). LOL

  9. Yea I see why guys go the cheap route. I wish I could of bought stock in ARP bolt company damn 500 for a set of head studs. I ordered some arp head studs main bearing studs and rod end nuts and blew my wad. But hey buy the right stuff from the get go and build the biggest baddest flatty to make all other flattys sound flat. Lol :D She's gonna be a thumper. Hey dale just bang me out one of those roller cams like in your nasty motor and it will sound just as good as yours. I can't wait to hear her start up the first time it's gonna give me the oht ohh feeling. Like when I use to clime the ropes in gym class.

  10. Welcome to flathead race motors (really almost any race motor) . . . they're a never ending vacuum for cash! And that is true, even when you don't break them and have to repair the crap. But . . . boy are they fun! LOL

This is to paintslinger805 and Cyclone Kev: I feel just as volvobrynk and malcolm1943 do, that interest is anything but falling off. Sometimes I don't have a comment, but I really enjoy others' comments and suggestions. You two are actually living the dream just as Clem and Bruce's Grandpa did in decades past. As they say in Texas, "It don't get no better'n this". October is coming ! ! !

Like you Gary - I read every post in this thread - I don't post here.

Bruce, you have one hell of a gabble of mentors, between your Grandfather's memory, CK, and all the other trad builds here, and you amazing skills at finding just THE right part, you can certainly do no wrong.

  16. Thanks guys it's nice to hear your comments. It makes me feel good that so many people injoy this build and history that I get to share with my grandpa and the world thanks to the hamb and the internet. I can't wait for trog. It's going to be a great time. I will be working on the car all today so I will shoot some pictures for y'all as I finish up. More fun to come.

  17. image.jpg Well I tried everything on these backing plates. I wish I could find some nicer not so rusty one but hey they are all I could find. There was someone on here that had a set they "say" they would sell me but I guess I have to buy the brake package to get them and they never returned my phone calls so oh well. You live and you learn. I hope knobby knocks that one looks way shitter than the other. One is perfect for the age look so down the road I will find one and replace. But it sure will stop the car for now..... I'm working on getting them on the car now so I will report back by end on the day.

Both work plenty well with a theory of I found Gramp's original Hypersonic tucked away in some old shed, all there just ruff and tired.
Why does one always seem to be worse than the other?
    Was Elmer's front axle stock?

  19. You know I'm starting to wonder that myself. Every pair iv seen even on cars one is always crapper than the other. And I guess if I never started this thread and I just started one that read here's my grandpas old dry lake car and never told anybody it wasent his car you'd have to belive me huh? I think that's pretty cool I just wish I could trade my original grill for one that has the same look as the car. ANY TAKERS out there. I would love to trade shell for shell this one is really nice og one. I dont think the insert is I got screwed on it but I know the shell is for sure.

  20. image.jpg image.jpg Hey check out the old Hollywood acc. Tail light. Still works too. Must have a 12v bulb but that will work with the 6v. My grandpas was wider but good luck finding one off those. Cops might not be able to see it untill they stick their face in it but hey they can't lie and say I don't have a lic. Light. Hahahah

  21. image.jpg Just to refresh everyone mind lookie here his must of been a 10 to 12 incher since the plates are 14" this ones a 5" so another thing down the road if I come across one. I also still need to find an old antenna that has the two round mounting things.

  22. image.jpg Just got the backing plate holes slotted and fitting the piston rings to keep everthing lined up. Going to put the brakes on the backing plates and get them in the car now.

You fool! Do you AND Kevin both need me to send you rivets for your crossmembers? The exposed sections rails are gonna look ridiculous without them in there you street rodder[emoji35]
I just got so riled up that I spilt my beer[emoji482]

  25. Lol yea I'm looking at a heights mustang two front bolt in crossmember. Rack and pinion bolt in. Billet wheels. Pop pop bang bang I'm all about that street rod thing.:eek:

  26. Of course your crossmember will be riveted in Wyatt thats why theres no bolts there. I got a guy around the corner that builds super badass time period 32s but he hard to befriend. I got an in now because the kid that helps him is now my buddy so pretty soon he is gonna to tell him to come help me. I could do it my self but this dude is the shit. plus he has all these special tools to hold the rivets and every size. I bought some parts from him and he said he would help me but he's a busy dude. So I'm not trippin it will all come together next blue moon. Shoot the moon!!!!!!!

Your brake spring is riding on top of the grease shields, you might want to find later ones that are flat on top to clear the spring. I have nicer backing plates (not chromed) I have both 40-41 and 42-47 style. Let me know.

  29. These are 1940 backing plates and grease shields in the pictures they look like they touch but they really don't. I also have the later Style grease shields. If such a problem does happen down the road I will change out for the flat tops. I also have a non chrome set as well so thank you hells. You got a edelbrock regular tall intake I could use that. Lol

  30. Hey hells hot rods do you know the size of the rivets that would help me out a lot. Thanks man
