    Hey everyone
So I'm really tired of the "patina" my customline has accumulated from the quickie paint job the last owner gave it. I want to take it down to metal and epoxy primer it. All it has right now is one maybe two coats of rattle can flat black and understandably quite a bit of surface rust. I don't think I need to hit it with a flapper disk or anything since its so thin. What grit should I use to sand off this old paint and rust and give the metal some bite for the primer but not gouge it? And also what do you guys use to clean bare metal before primer
    Thanks guys

Well if it's got surface rust that gotta come off too as well as the rattle can job. I like 8" 80 grit on a 8" soft pad to do the job

michael knight and tb33anda3rd like this.
  3. Clean with soap and water, clean with wax and gease remover.
I like to use 80 grit like loveoftiki.
clean with wax and grease remover again. Keep cleaning till the rags dont pick up any more dust or metal.
    then prime:)

In case it's not clear, he means to clean it well before you start sanding...then again, after you're done sanding....

80 grit on a DA sander should do it, if that's really all there is on the car.

3M has an 8" hook-it, black, Scotchbrite disc that when used on a slow speed buffer will strip it to bare metal without removing any, and leaves a nice surface finish.

All of the above are right on . The only thing I would add is if you are using a DA sander , switch it to straight sanding mode instead of orbital, seems to work better for me anyhow. And please wear a top quality dust mask. otherwise you will choking up***** for a month! Have fun Larry

80 grit and then make sure its clean. Clean again and again with wax and grease remover until your towels are not dirty. May take 3-4 times.
