Hello! Trying to find out if anyone makes an adapter plate that will allow one to bolt a GM/Ford T5 to a 225 slant 6. Yes, I searched the forums, and the web, and found nothing. Some of the posts were fairly old, so I was hoping that someone may have started making one. I checked the Slant 6 forum, and Mopar Chat, nothing. Thanks... Chris
Ever consider a Mopar A833 trans, 4 spd overdrive from a 1975-84 Mopars like Aspens/Volares and Vans/trucks?
LM14 - I have an email into Wilcap. They make a slant 6 bellhousing, but it's for a 4spd. Flat Six Fix - I just found out about the OD A833 yesterday, and yes, I would consider it. There's one on Ebay, but its a complete setup and the guy wants almost $1000 for it + $250 for shipping, which is a bit rich for me. Chris
Barsteel, look around, there out there, you could contact Hitek on this forum, he is a Guru with these transmissions...
Also check the classifieds on the for A bodies only forum and its sister B and C body forums for one an A883 : http://www.forabodiesonly.com/ $750 -http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/threads/a-body-od-trans-package.349993/
In order to mount a t5 on a Mopar you will be buying a complete bellhousing. Remember that Mopar has a very long input shaft so you cannot mount a trans with a shorter shaft on a oem bell. The A833 od is about your only option for an od on a /6 but it was a oem option so the stock parts should be out there. Sadly, the /6 has a odd block pattern and starter location so it is difficult to swap bells. Some suggestions: Use 'searchtempest' and try a variety of search terms. I quickly found an A833 od in Seattle for $350. Check with Mopar only bone yards like http://www.wildcatmopars.com/ or http://bigmauto.com/ ...word of warning...GM also used an A-833 is some ½t trucks but it has a different bolt pattern...trust but verify.... .
Thanks to all for the replies. The official word from Wilcap is "No, we don't have one, but we can make you one for around $1200.00". There are several guys on some of the Dodge/ slant 6 pages who have made their own adaptor plates, but I'm not sure what they used for a bellhousing. Will have to look into it some more. Chris
Sure sounds like fun Chris! I can only tell you from experience that often times parts (and especially with adapters) that parts for Mopar applications are not always readily available. I first learned that 15 years ago when I adapted a Viper T-56 6-speed to a 340 for my 37' Dodge pickup. That was well before any bell housings or adapters existed for that swap. I recently did something to my 318 A-series (Polysphere) engine as to what you're wanting to do in that I adapted a T-5 to it. I used a regular Mopar small block aluminum bell housing and then made a custom adapter to mate a 94-95 "world class" T-5 to it. As usual with non-standard stuff, there is a fair amount of engineering that needs to be done even before you mate-up the transmission. As others have mentioned, input shaft length needs to be correct to assure clutch engagement with the splines of the input shaft and to allow proper release bearing travel. You will need a clutch pressure plate that bolts to your flywheel and a clutch disc that fits the splines of your new transmission. From there, you need to figure out how you will actuate the clutch (mechanical linkage, mechanical cable, hydraulic external slave, hydraulic internal slave, etc,). One of the final steps is making or having made a new driveshaft. Conversions like tis are not all that difficult and are enjoyable as long as you enjoy that part of the build process. I sure do. If you need any help along the way, please PM me. - EM
