Muttley....may be a little late to your thread, but, I used the FS dist. and I cant complain about a single thing, and their tech support is about as good as it gets with just a quick call....cant recommend them enough.

It's still a good swap but much smaller than back in the day. Only took 2 pictures, a table of cool stuff that I couldn't afford and a '28 phaeton (the sad remains) that I could afford.

The seller even delivered it, of course I'm only 10 minutes from the swap.
Sold my '48 a few months ago and my wife got her car back in the garage. Remodeling a bathroom now and then the kitchen so she'll enjoy it for a few months more til I can start on this thing.

Anyone have a good process for tuning in dual strombergs. I read the link that is at the beginning of each months banger meet. That got me going in right direction. One question is can I use a manifold vacuum port to set the air fuel screws. It only seams like one of the two on each carb makes a difference. I'm having a problem w getting it to idle low enough ash well as returning to a decent idle. Also seams lean at part throttle according to the plugs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ok hooked up a vacuum gauge. Rear carb outside screw I get results in vacuum gauge. Inside screw (closest to motor) doesnt. On front carb it's opposite of that. Doesn't make any sense. Maybe someone can shed some light. It has 17 in he's of vacuum according to my gauge. That's up from 14. The screws that don't do anythjng can be run all the way in or all the way out and I get absolutely no change
..not even a flicker on vacuum gauge

Matt to help you we need a bit more info just what strombergs are you tuning
81s are pretty much plug and play 97s or 48s each have their own tuning likes

Been following along for some time , have a few questions about a tach for these bangers. I have a 31 Model A engine , 12volt with FSI distributor. Motor is mild build, 6:1 aluminum head , 60 over blance crank, lightn flywheel 36#, twin 81's, R-1 cam .
What are the RPMs that these bangers turn ? what tach is being used ? Wanted one that has a good swep 0 to 4000,?

    Dusty,

I'm using a 4K tach from SpeedHut. I like the 270 degree sweep.
    http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GL2-TACH-04/7/Tachometer-Gauge-4K-RPM

I would image maximum rpm is quite dependent on many factors don't know the power band of the R-1 cam grind. I currently will pull up to 3500 rpm in 2nd gear with my Stipe 340 cam. At TROG last year I saw 4000rpm in second gear when I realized that I had forgotten to shift into third (too busy racing). Decided to shift right away.
