In '64 my folks and my aunt and uncle bought new impala wagons. Ours was the standard white with ice blue interior with AC. My uncle ordered his blue on blue with the 300 hp 327, 4 speed (like the car above), dash mounted tach, posi rear, and AC.. We made many cross country vacations not to mention countless trips to our place at the river in those wagons. I still have the 327 out of ours but I wish I had my uncles car today. The wagon was my moms car, dad had a '56 pickup running a 371 Olds, and my aunt drove their 4 speed wagon every day. Tiny thing, she could barley see over the dash much less handle all those shifts. It went to my cousins in the mid 70s when they got driving age as their first car then it was sold off to a friend of theirs who moved to Nor Cal.

Even back in the 60's, original Impala 4 speed wagons were pretty rare, I don't recall ever seeing one. A friend of mine had an original 67 Malibu wagon in the 80's with OEM L-79 engine and 4 speed, I drove it once, man that was a cool car.
I completely missed seeing the floor shifter in this shot until @flyin-t mentioned it, looking closer, it looks like it may have been a 3 on the tree (or automatic), regardless whether it had a 4 speed installed or just converted to a 3 on the floor, I bet that was a fun car.
I had a lot of 4 speed Chevy's and I really miss those days.

 

There was a guy I met in Brandon Mississippi area about 12 yrs ago, who was building a 66 Lmpala wagon to his ideal, a SS 427 4 speed wagon. He showed me the work he was doing and I wonder if he still has it. He was trained by his dad in bodywork and was a appraiser for several insurance companies. It was nearly ready for paint when he showed the car to me.

 

Glad you guys liked it as much as I enjoyed finding and posting them. I kind of felt I over did it though.

 

You're absolutely right, I didn't see the original shifter mount on the column. I was just into the floor shifter and the memories it brought back.
Sounds kinda funny but my uncle and dad street raced the hell out of that wagon. They had a little system, my uncle who'd keep both hands on the wheel would pull up to someone, give the nod to race when the light changed. Usually the other guy would be laughing so hard that 2 older guys (they were both 28 in '64...and both had been out of the marines since they were 20) in a wagon would want to race. Dad would slyly reach over and slide the shifter in to first and when the light changed they were gone, catching the other guy, no doubt still laughing, by surprise.
I have no idea if they won any races in that boat but they had a ball doing it.

 

Reminds me of a buddy of mine in the late 60s. He had a ratty 555 4-dr with a fresh 365 HP 327, quiet mufflers, real sleeper. At a light, he'd surrpetitiously slip the Muncie into first, rev it a tiny bit, then, when the other guy was looking, he'slip the dummy Powerglide column lever into "D" with a stupid grin on his face ( he always had a stupid grin on his face), then leave the guy sitting in his dust when the light turned. Just killed 'em every time. Wasn't a big town, so word got around quick, but it was fun while it lasted.

When C&O Hydros were just getting started, we had them install a stick hydro in our 1958 Impala. My mom wanted to convert the 3 speed column to an automatic. She needed to drive the car once a week to the stores. So, she paid to have it converted. We were finished racing in the stock class and needed a good reliable tow car for our 40 Willys build, too. Converted it was... this trans made the car so much faster off the line and there was never a missed shift. The stick hydro did do a great job on the street drags for us. No one else had such a transmission. Just like the above stories, the column shifter still was functional and had the stock, long, chrome lever with the white ball on the end. But, there was no PRNDL on the dash. Just drop it down a notch and drive was engaged. Once, coming home from Pomona, we were on the freeway driving with our 4:56 gears. Every hot rodder that came by would make a "shift to 3rd symbol action," but we just shrugged and drove home.
