I'm not sure of the story but this Big Car still exists and has been restored.

Is it just me, or does the entire pavement look like a sheet of ice?

  11. It looks pretty icy - maybe the driver used the excuse "I need to take a photo" just to get out of the car and get his fingers to relax from their death grip on the steering wheel.

Reminds me of a trip my wife and I made years ago to Mount Hood.
I think the finger indentations are still in the armrest.

Ah yes. We sat up on Cabbage Hill (Emigrant Hill) above Pendleton in a school bus for 5 hours with the swim team waiting for the emergency vehicles and tow trucks to untangle the 5 semi-truck knot created by excess speed and icy conditions a few years ago - my husband said the mountainside looked like Christmas with all the flashy lights from his Pendleton viewpoint. That 6 mile 6% Grade gets them all of the time. I can chain a school bus in no time as a result of driving Eastern Oregon in the winter. Battle Mountain is another fun one in the snow and wind headed towards Ukiah and Long Creek.

A bomb test site, Yucca Flats.

The reviewing stand is still there on the hillside.

  20. PIR, 1976 it's really not so vintage, but some days it feels like a million years ago.

Those were the days Maggie, first time I got to see a rear engine dragster was at PIR in the early 70's. Made my first ever 1/4 mile pass here and quite possibly drank my first (legal) beer at this very race (as a spectator).

When you have been on black ice on a road like this, you WILL need to clean your shorts![IMG]
