Here's a few shots of the steering column going together.
1468973979235.jpg I used a coupler with splines on one end and the other side for weld on applications. I machined a flat spot for the lock nut to seat better and so the column tub would clear it.
1468974357322.jpg I will weld the shaft to the coupler once the final length is determined (after the seat is installed ).
1468974657190.jpg I machined a taper on the inside of a piece aluminum tubing to match the steering box which makes for a super tight fit. I will drill a tap on the under side for bolts later.
1468974858151.jpg I machined a step in the tube end for a roller bearing, again this might be redone if I shorten the column.
1468975013310.jpg I made a hub that I welded another splined coupler to, and which the steering wheel bolts to. 1468975157848.jpg Modified the horn button cover so I could use ARP bolts and put a 1932 quarter in.

Been working on the dash a bit. 1469905989491.jpg 1469906002771.jpg
Stearate by welding a piece of 1/8 x 1 1/4 steel strap to the bottom to use as an attachment point. 1469906188801.jpg 1469906200344.jpg
Did some work on the ends and the body so it fits nice in this area and filled the lower screw hole as its not needed now since I added the lower mounting point, and it was such a pain trying to get that screw started into the captured nut anyway. 1469906545590.jpg 1469906551249.jpg
Mounted the gauges and made a stainless spear to add some flare. 1469906645041.jpg 1469906655514.jpg 1469906668400.jpg
I then added the ignition switch, horn button, power plugs, and place for toggle switches for various needs.

  5. Thanks again for your lesson. I really enjoy "looking over your shoulder". Amazing workmanship with an eye for detail. You already must have spent hundreds of hours on your roadster, but definitely worth it.

Hutch on your engine, Are you using a PCV system ? I like the clean rocker covers.
I wish I was a kid next door and could hang out in your shop. Your son is very lucky.

Mr T, I'm using the stock setup which is a breather tube from the back of the block to the air cleaner and a line from the oil filler tube in front to the carb base which has a inline PVC valve.

Today I had my son Kyle cut out some circular pieces of sheet metal to use to fill the holes in the inner skin of the trunk. 1470348460107.jpg 1470348470592.jpg 1470348484022.jpg 1470348492970.jpg 1470348498162.jpg 1470348503366.jpg

I intended on getting a lot done at work today, and then I started browsing this thread...

Thank you for setting an impossibly high standard of craftsmanship that I will now endlessly try to match! (but most likely fail to meet)

They are Comp Cams Pro Magnum roller rockers, the engine builder machines down the threaded ends of the poly locks to shorten them up a bit to fit under the stock valve covers.

Good to see your son getting in on the action. And by the way, that 4 jaw chuck sure is a unique stand base for the shear. Lol.

Awesome craftsmanship, it's great to see your son is learning skills. Today most kids would rather waste time with computers games. It one hope that there will be skilled people in the future.

@Hutch built, beautiful fabrication work. One of my favorite thing's about the board here. I have a question concerning your hidden roll cage setup. Are you going to tie that into the frame at some point? Reason I'm asking is I've been quietly researching doing something very similar on my roadster but have seen a few people mentioning that they offer zero side impact protection unless welded to the frame and the seats attached to the cage instead of the floor. A few guys made mention of people being pinned inside a wreck or even killed from the cage because of it being bolted to the body. Just wondering what your plans are as everything on your car is top notch.

Looking forward to updates and now I have a reason to drive out to York next year. Hope to see it there...

Thanks for the positive remarks. I didn't really put the roll bar in for impact protection, though I think it would help, as much as for structure rigidity and connection points for things such as the batteries, gas tank, etc. The bars are welded to a 10 gauge subrail which bolts to the top of the frame and attached to the body itself in various places.

Been spending some time on the trunk. I primered both the inner and outer skins leaving an inch of bare metal on each side of where it will be welded. I then tacked it in with my MIG and then finished with my TIG. Then I realized that the bottom hole in the inner skin is there for a reason, to put the latch in, well duh! So I made a removable plate to gain access. Then I reinstalled the trunk and put the tail lights in. 1471094119815.jpg 1471094135421.jpg 1471094150980.jpg 1471094170102.jpg 1471094205692.jpg 1471094220751.jpg 1471094232576.jpg 1471094240811.jpg

I'm excited to say I'm going to have the roadster in the Jalopyrama show in Westminster Maryland this October. Should be in full mock up and be ready to be blown apart for paint after the show. I rolled outside today and took some pictures. It was nice to see from more the 6 feet away. I think I'm going to raise the back up about an inch to give it a bit more rake, other then that I'm happy with the overall look.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    Stellar work Hutch
That trunk lid really is nice, really like how you go the extra mile on every part of this car.
Curious about the e-brake cables and the changes between the two photos.
I agree on the rear ride height, at least one more inch higher would really look great.

The set up is a single cable from a early ford brake handle and then connects to two cables going to each rear drum brake.
