I remember a '62 FI in '62 that a mining engineer bought new. There were 3 things I remember.. *It was fawn beige - I hated that color! *He double clutched all gears going up... or down...?????? *When it coasted downhill (there was a long downhill stretch that went past my small-town school).... all you could hear was the valve lash! The FI fed no fuel on the coast down 'til the revs approached fast idle, it seemed and the valve train sound was all that you could hear. Yes, he was an NCRS nazi, later, in his retirement years. .
From post 1269, the question about a 61 vs a 62... The 61 had flat fiberglass and the cove was a trim strip. The cove was usually a different color to 'trim' the car. The 62 had that raised glass on the fender and the door to make the cove. The cove and the car were all one color. The cove ornaments would fit on either car. Sorry if this was already answered... I have wrecks from both years. The one in the avitar came home 200 miles with a chain hooked to a 56 chevy, in 1966. And yes, it still looks the same as it did 50 years ago... Don't ever convince yourself that you can do it 'later'... Later never comes. The black car on the left was my dream when we towed it home......
That is still my car, badass and mean as ever and strictly business. We did a major job like you have yet to do. We were all in our teens and did not know sh!t what we were doing and the green car turned out great and is still racing.
Those are cool Gene. Could you tell us a little about them. What years that you built them. Motor and transmission combo and how fast they were. Also I always like to hear how much they were bought and sold for if you remember. It seems incredible to hear the prices from the old days now.
I built the 61 in 1968. I bought it for 750.00...no motor etc. It had a short stroke rat in it with Crower injectors. Not really very fast, we took to the AHRA race in Bristol Tenn in 1968 (honeymoon). I traded it for the 65 vette no motor etc. The 65 was raced with a 292 inch mouse with homemade injectors. It had a swing front end (later illegal) that allowed the front wheels to move back about 2"...made me look like a much better driver than I was. Traded it for a front motor dragster that was pretty fast...
Jason, here are a couple other pics of the same car. One is the Heffernan Brothers at Connecticut Dragway in 1965. I have read somewhere there were brothers although I am not familiar with them other than the 59 that ran in MP later on (that I believe are the same guys). The second photo I am not sure of the date.
i saw that vette at Puyallup also was flawless top to bottom he asked about my 37 gasser and seemed like a really cool guy thought it had a blown hemi if i remember correctly
If that 61 Corvette is there try to get some pictures of it for this thread. It's been hard to find pictures of it.
Jason here are a couple of pictures of the car. Running a 540 ci BBC right around 5.91 (I believe 9.20 in the 1/4). Still a work in progress. Quain's first car was a 62 Vette and so it is something that brings back good memories (although his brother Mitch is handling the driving duties with the car). From all appearances Quain (and possibly others in his shop-don't want to sell anyone short) has done a great job. Hopefully he will do a build thread. There are a couple of youtube videos of the car (just a few runs) but not sure on how to upload a youtube video.
Johnny Loper's Ole Hoss in the far lane. Does anyone know who is in the near lane? Could be Mazmanian early on
