Projects The bucket of ugly! A de-uglifying thread...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by need louvers ?, Aug 14, 2013.

  1. I don't hate it, but the splash aprons look HUGE! Me thinks they need to try to shrink those a little if possible.....might look better in paint instead the gel coat, but I doubt it. I have a set of the old Bird Automotive styled fenders for my next build, but they don't use splash aprons. Not everybody's cup of tea, but I ain't building it for everybody.

  2. The proportions on that Speedway car look all out of whack to me, but then I'm accustomed to looking at Henry's version. ;)

I'm with you two, the aprons look gigantic. It has a lot of neat looking elements, but somehow it doesn't all come together for me. Where's Gary?

  5. Well, I guess they are the same. Speedway's site says they splashed the molds off of a set of original fenders. I do think they look significantly better in paint. I went looking for pics of the style of fenders I have stashed for my next T, and I gotta say I think my tastes have changed again, because none of the pics I found really appealed to me any more. I do think I'll still use them, but they may not stay on much. Sure wish I could find my copy of the late 70's / early 80's Bird Automotive catalog that started this obsession, but I'm pretty sure my mom tossed it after I joined the Navy.

  7. These, not as much? These are the style I have, I do think they look much better with narrower rear tires.

  8. Yeah that is near perfection apart from the lack of front brakes but the inlet manifold really does it for me. Heck, that makes my tri-power look inadequate.

  9. Sorry but the second photo isn't my cup of tea and the screen angle really is ugly to me.

  10. No problem, Whiplash. I don't really like that car either. The windshield rake is WAY over done, just for starters. And don't get me started on Mr. Gasket scoops! I've personally thrown two in the trash just to make sure they didn't end up on another vehicle! I didn't put it up as anything other than an example of the type of fenders I was referring to. That's why I wish I could find (or replace) my copy of that Bird Automotive catalog. That car looks NOTHING like the one I remember!

  11. Picture this car black with the red cars fenders and it would be pretty close...

  13. Oh, let me guess please, it is those two Kiwi blokes that we saw on TV3 NewsHub @ 6.00pm for causing a fuss on the salt this year I'm sure.
I am in total agree with you Sir Blownfuel, Mr Gasket scoops really don't suit small Roadsters and funnily enough the first time I saw my Roadster before purchasing I asked the guy to remove one of those ugly things which looked totally ridiculous on top of the Quad Jet. before I would say, yes, I will purchase the car. The butterflies weren't even hooked up to open at any revs.

I noticed a problem with the rear end and cross bar of my T. There wasn't going to be enough clearance for movement downwards.

The solution came to me today, after a hard days work and a Bud Light.

Okay, when I tried to move the rear end assembly forward to get clearance, it pulled the shocks forward also and placed them angling forward from the upper mount. So, I'm going to weld an upper shock bracket forward of the inner ones that are already there and cut the rear ones off. That will give me an 1 1/2" forward to get my clearance. I'm probably not explaining it clearly, but when I post pics of the finish, you'll get it. Clearance at the kick up and the axle tubes is plenty. Maybe another look at a pic will make it clearer.

When I weld everything up, pics will make things clearer.

I wasted NO time in seeing if this would work. Check it out. Behold the clearance.:D

The forward tape, shows the new radius rod mount location.

Old Round Fart suggested using the rear mount for a tail light. I had planned on using '37 Ford tail lights. I'll see how it works out.

Question for the peanut gallery. I'm thinking of using body filler to smooth out the welds on my chassis. Yea, Naw or WTF?

    Oh...... here's a video of a nice T Bucket.

So............. is this thread dead? Can I post PORN and get it closed? Hello?

  20. Fred, nothing wrong with filling the welds, but the age old body filler rules apply. Use as little as possible, or it might crack. The threads not dead, but a lot of people are busy with other things right now. I usually check it during class, but most other nights I buried in homework.

  21. I kinda thought you had gone off the reservation when you described your rear end problem, but the pictures made it make much more sense!

As long as the welds are good ones,Smooothing out with a little grinding n filler before paint is fine,I really like smooth an shiny myself. I used some more after doing my update of boxing my old frame on the last rebuild/restore. I have found that as time goes by,smooth an shiny will show up a forming crack before not smooth an shiny will,so its even a bit of a saftey more as well ! rolling frameA.jpg

  25. Met the owner of this Dodge in Wendover, he drove it from Pennsylvania over 5 days. John is in his 80's and been going to the salt since 1960. I like it a lot. JW

  26. Heck that is impressive for an 80 year old gentleman to drive, what 2/3's of the way across America to be a part of the Salt Racing, pure dedication for sure. And it's not as if it was a closed modern car with all the bells and whistles but a right proper car with natural air conditioning. I only hope my health is as good at that age as his is.

  27. This is John and myself at Wendover, we had some good chats. Everyone was taller than me. JW

  28. Don't worry Jeremy, when all of us slightly over weight ( me hugely ) and a wee bit taller guys try and get in and out of our T's coolly, you will be able to just sit back and smile and thank your parents for your wonderful genes.

  30. Looking good. How did you determine the final ride for the relevant springs you will use? JW
