Hot Rods LET'S CRITIQUE WHEELS - New Repro Wheels that do or don't

Thanks man someone told me that they are out of business.

I guess that out aluminum was my point, but the newer alloys don't even look like the older aluminum alloys that they used for wheels. Too light in color or that's the way that my eye sees it.

    George,
I got interested in hot rods in the early 60's, and from then on up is what I'm really interested in. I know it's the tail end of the HAMB era, but that's the way it is in Larry's World. :D

And I guess my Harley ways carry over too - difference in choppers and dressers.

I thought the old rims were made of Magnesium, hence the term "Mags"

Wonder when the patents run out on the sprint? American Rebel Wheel makes a virtual Sprint clone as well, how do they get around the patent issue?

BTW, you can still get old looking magnesium wheels from Eric Vaughn/Real Rodder Wheels and he sells aluminum wheels that look Dow 7 coated or plated to look like magnesium wheels.
Ya need to take a deep breath and sit down before you check prices though. :D

Yes, I looked at those, NICE wheels. I don't want to spend huge money on wheels for my falcon, it will probably be sold later on. I was just thinking, those Rodmasters would look INCREDIBLY good on my black S10, they would "make" that truck!
I searched earlier this morning, a couple sites still list rodmasters, but I bet if you call them, they are probably out of stock and on indefinite back-order.

Yes, I looked at those too, posted a link above. The American Rodmasters were a little over half that, these are too much money to spend on that tub of turds, but it sure would look cool! I'd have to do 15x8's with a 4.5" BS AND 275'S, anymore than that and they would be hanging WAY out in the breeze.
Maybe I should try to get one of the photoshop wizards to do it. Or maybe not, if I see it, I will WANT it.:D
Its a long shot but maybe I should contact that website that I looked at this morning that showed the Rodmasters, they were like $220 for 15X8 rears, and around $180 for the fronts, that would be do-able. Its would be a longshot if they still had any, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

  9. Haibrands and others were made of magnesium and actually the very first aluminum"mags" were called "mag style" wheels. You are absolutely correct.;)

The older mag style wheels were made with different alloys that modern aluminum wheels, some if I am not mistaken included magnesium in the alloy.

If you get a chance compare a modern Ansen Sprint to an older one, both polished. there is a world of difference.

A little something that dickhead has experience with.

Because it would just not be Kosher on the HAMB, I won't include a photo, but that blasphemous abomination they came out with called the "Sweet Swirl" more than likely made Ted Halibrand roll over in his grave.

  11. I had to go find a picture of them. Directional patern! I guess they were thinking it made your car look powerful unless of course you put them on back wards.

Falcon, I know what you mean about the lugs, and even thought about remachining the holes to take the original style stepped acorn nut and large flat washer. Good Luck

Well, like I say, I would still use them on the US five spokes or something, where I wasn't concerned about making it look sixties, so they do serve a purpose, and I appreciate knowing about them.
But I wouldn't use them on a real vintage five spoke, I would feel like I had dropped the ball at the very end.

I looked at the Rodmasters again, the 15x8s weren't $220 each, they are $202! DEAL! I am going to email them about a set of four for my '67 Falcon, if they have the size and backspace I need, I think I will pull the trigger.

I see these on ebay as hailbrands out of wellington KS. They never show many so maybe they are selling runs of this wheel or that wheel sell them and produce more.

I have 16x8's and 16x7's on my Nova, nice wheels.
Not for everyone but a nice change from the AR's. Note the center cap, screw on, alumium not those cheesy plastic things.

Like the wheels, and really like the frontend treatment. At first, I thought it was a Canadian '63.

Don't all the wheel companies make the steelie in the Chevy pattern ? You are right about those ugly-ass smoothies. Steel smoothies look homemade while the steel gennies with slots are so complete.

Your ride contains all the ingredients of "the right rod". You should be proud ! Hope to see it at the RoundUp in April.

True that Brylcreme used the slogan: "A liitle dab'll do you!"

  30. I'll be @ the round up, but not in that car. It's long gone (7 years ago)
