Ray Moore's Chicken Coupe from Cleveland, Ohio. He won his class at the Nationals in Indianapolis in 1961
Miraculous indeed! Thanks for posting that photo. A long-time buddy of mine in Minnesota owned that car back in the 1970's, he actually drove it on the street for awhile. When the car was at the Meltdown Drags the friend who used to own that Willys texted me some pix of himself behind the wheel. Did not know John Z. owns it now. How long has he had it? As mentioned, I don't think the paint etc. has ever been re-done so it must have been in storage for awhile. Man, this is a great thread.
I think that this is the same car. It was called Rowdy Willy and was owned and run by James "Jim" Butler and his wife Inez and yes she turned wrenches on it too and was a very good mechanic. She is in one of the pictures. There are some differences in the pictures but they were probably taken a few years apart.
(Barbara Hamilton) Look at the stance and the four bolt chromed front wheels. I bet that these were the chromed original Willys wheels. 37-39 model 48 Willys came from the factory with four bolt wheels
Do you know who is setting in the car in the build picture? Those are cool shots and kind if remind me of the build shots of Dave Hales Willys
It sounds like this was the early Malicoat Brothers car that was driven by Bones Balogh http://www.jrthompson.net/bones/bonesbalogh.html
Found this in this old thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/vintage-drag-racers-with-their-cars.400138/ Roadsters Wee Willys roadster
Good stuff everyone. Nice pictures and those vintage magazine articles are top notch. Back in those days they told all of the details of the build and gave the recipe to build one yourself just like theirs.
this is the same car... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-picture-thread.550556/page-176#post-11652362
and this is it again http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...-picture-thread.550556/page-176#post-11696544
Hello, Since I took that action movie clip at Bakersfield in 1960, I forgot to label it recently after remembering it was Al Hirshfield vs Al Dal Porto. The other drag race thread and 296Ardun were the ones with the correct information on the pickup. Can't remember all of the people in all of the clips, it was a long time ago. And of course, CRS. Thanks, Jnaki
@jnaki The Al Dal Porto Willys pickup became the Panella Brothers pickup. Here is the Hirchfield Automotive Willys.
Here is some more information on the Al Dal Porto Willys Pickup from the Airoso Brothers thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...s-willys-gasser-brother-joe-encounter.390018/
