  1. changing to a "modern" fan will be a last resort. my dad used to run it with the hood off when it was hot.

  3. Hey Ted- Congrats on the pick. Maybe there's something with an extra blade that might not be too far off correctness? Either way=CQQLNESS.

  4. i was told there is a five blade fan that is late 60's style. i can't go bigger than 18" or it hits the lower hose .

  6. Hey Ted, your cardboard form will lay up a great structure in fiberglass ... but I'm sure if you've gone that far, it will be for metal anyway. Get it done. Chrome !! :)

  8. ok, been busy so i have yet to put the turn signals on or make a fan shroud. just a lot of honey-dos .
last winter i bought a 55 chevy six cylinder, 3 speed, and rear end that was replaced with a vor-something 700wizbang disc brake all around nineincher etc...... so i got the discards from out of the 30k mile survivor . the rear should have been a 3.70 and i wanted it for a future project. since i plan on driving my car to the jalopyrama in Maryland [6hrs] i thought maybe i would throw the 3.70 in for the trip.
i saw the 55 chevy 2dr and it was in great shape so i believe the 30k on the speedo [in a box, he replaced it with a digital] but the rear was sitting under a pile of leaves behind his shed so i wasn't sure how bad it was.
i brought it in and took it apart, brakes were shot [rusty] but the e brake cable is mint and the gears look perfect, nice and oily and show no wear. DSCF5694.JPG DSCF5696.JPG DSCF5697.JPG DSCF5698.JPG DSCF5699.JPG
now i just have to paint it gold/copper.

I like the digital speedo idea.... oh, wait, I don't

3.70 is still kind of busy on the expressways though? Put the zero where the seven is, and vice versa LOL

and here I am switching the 3.70s out of my posi chunk for my t and replacing them with 4.11's...going to look at a '61 corvette rear on Wed. Maybe it'll have 4.56s?

  13. yeah he put a bunch of 1 800 please send me the latest, greatest, shiny, flashy light, powder coated stuff on the car. original paint and interior were perfect. ohh well i got the good stuff.:)
i am running the 4.56 now and i love, love, love it! it's a long ride and the 3.70 will help.
it should be worth the couple hours to swop it out.

  14. most of the driving i do is blasting around the area, hour or two drive. first gear in this tranny is HIGH and when i had the 3.36 in it it was hard to get going, i hope the 3.70 won't be too high and i plan to swop it back after i return.

Wow, loving a 4.56....in Ct driving..

Ok, just saw the new post about the old first gear ratio;;;;I do get it now. They can be tough to play nice with a decent final gear.

I can't get used to upper 3's anymore. Old age I guess. I was with a guy heading from eastern Ct to central NYS. he had SBC TH350 A/T, 3.73s with no floor mats etc. Halfway there I asked "how can you stand this". He was clueless what I meant. An hour later I wanted to get out and walk home.

Nothing turns a good running 283 into a GUTLESS DOG like a tall gear. Just KILLS them.I was planning on the same thing, assemble a 4.11 posi chunk, and a 3.70 peg leg, and only use the 3.70 for long trips in the US.

Frank, my driver/shop truck has 4.56s with 28" tires and an od, I literally can't remember the last time I even had it in od.;) I can't get used to upper threes either...granny gears.:p Not many of us left Tim...

  18. i have a couple driving mottos: "arrive alive" and "pass the ass". the cars quickness allows me to get the "text"icles far back in the rear view mirror. the high ways to Maryland average cruising speed is 75 the "taller gear" will level the playing field.

    Roger that.
    My second car was a 57 BelAir 2dr. ht. Had a stock 64 issue 283 with a T10 and 308's.
When I blew the rearend I put 411's in it and it felt like I had put a 327 in it, loved that car.

a couple years ago, I would not have believed that....but last few years or so, I worked on 3 early Lasalles for an estate. These have an Olds designed straight flat 8. with a trans very similar looking to the 37-8 Buick big car trans.

The first one drove around my lot like a cloud, awesome car. The second one I got running just was awful, and it felt dog tired and dead, and a well worn clutch. I later found out it had a 54 Olds rear with 3.08 installed back in the 60s...stored since 65. They must have lived in a flat part of the USA, as it was so bad on the slightest grade in my lot.

So I got to thinking why firsts were so low back then. It's quite simple really; the road speeds were 40-45, so the axle was geared for that cruising speed. But if they had not used that geared up first, then first would have felt like a granny first in a truck 4 speed.

  21. i want to see if the 3 speed i picked up with the rear has a lower first gear, so i can swop the guts. i get the feeling it is the same tho. my dad said he swopped these gears into the car but can't remember why.
the car has 28" rear tires, the motor comes alive at about 2800 rpm's, the "second" engine kicks in at about 3000 rpm's. i think [someone has a formula to confirm] highway speeds over 65 should be in my power rpm.

12 bolt is way stronger than one of these, by a LONG shot. Hell, an 8.5" ten bolt is a LOT stronger than one of these. But they were a very popular rear end in hot rods in the sixties, so...

Technically that's red paint inside there. I'd leave it just to get Mark from harassing you.[emoji6]
