Projects T.R.O.G Rules/Specifications

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Felipe Toltecatl, Sep 29, 2016.

  1. I'm building an A banger powered T roadster that I'd like to run at TROG West next year. I saw their list of rules on the website but they didn't mention anything about electronic ignitions. I'm assuming they're frowned upon but does anyone know for sure? The rest of my car period perfect.

If it's hidden inside an old looking distributor, that is no problem. If you are using a modern MSD distributor with huge coil box mounted to the firewall and a spaghetti mess of modern wires to make it all work, that's just no bueno in any way shape or form, TROG or not.

Be sure to not miss this TROG though. You will still have a blast being a part of the event, and it's more motivation to get that car there next time.

why would you even consider using electronic ignition on such a car?

On a banger that distributor becomes pretty much a "look what I got" item no matter where you take the car.

On my boat tail roadster I end up studying each part to make sure it would be authentic for the period that the build is to represent as a two seat race car and hopefully everything also fits in with the Trog concept. I may have to defer from running the flathead six and run the V8 flathead to fit in the criteria but that would let the 8 go out and play long before the 31 Vic needs it. The car was planned around the six long before Trog came about though.

you really can't get a point igntion to work for a one day event? wow....

(the last two "events" I participated in, I drove cars with point ignition...59 Edsel on the LeMons Rally, and Chevy II on Drag Week. Both worked fine, no ignition problems at all. And got 3rd place of 40+ in the Rally, and first of 4 in my class on DW)

  10. I like the simplicity & zero maintenence of electronic (my personal preference). I may just use the B distributor I have. Not that I care what anybody thinks, just wanted to stick to the rules. Can't have much fun running on the sand if you can't pass inspection.

Let's keep it traditional here.... Why would you want to use an electronic especially at TROG.

Just read a good article on Trog in the new (new on the stand today) Old Skool rodz issue 79. They noted that If the part or speed part wasn't available on or before 1953 it was a no go. Even then you had better have documentation to support your running of certain pieces that may be questionable as (were they used before or not). Word was that a few guys were changing parts and pieces before the event to comply.
Hell if you go to Pismo this year we can walk around and take pictures and marvel at the cars that are there and get ideas for our own for next year.

Common sense really pays off sometimes... I'm guessing the ROG folks don't want giant HEIs sticking out of an engine, but a clean vintage appearing unit is a great alternative and not a bad idea. Just make sure u carry some of xtra parts for that electronic set up.... I betting thair not "off the shelf" parts.

  19. If I was playing by the rules and someone beat me using parts that weren't allowed I think I might mention it to the inspectors at the event no mater how clean and vintage appearing the part was.

I'd say that appearance is the issue there, if it looks like a proper correct vintage part it works.

Even if I manage to get my car ready to go next year or the year after and get to take it, just getting to race it is a pretty big win in my book. True being beat by someone who managed to sneak a prohibited by the rules item by such as a modern smooth shifting trans or other later model and far more efficient piece would suck when everyone else followed the criteria to the letter.

If the electronic ignition set up is inside a vintage looking distributor I don't think it would make any difference. I don't think they will pull the cap and kick you out if they found electronic ignition inside. Don't mention it to them.

  22. They said it's within the rules but I'm going to run my B distributor anyways. My broke ass has to use what I have.

It's a grudge match race... For fun...... There's no 2017 corvette prize.... It's for fun!

I've raced ROG every year except the date swap in June.... There's lots of stuff on the beach racing that doesn't technically fit the rules. Let's not split atoms here and make something big out of nothing,,,, now if this were NASCAR there would be a problem.

Right now I am just figuring out what to pack to take to go play spectator next weekend. Two cameras with two spare batteries each and 30 gig sd cards inside, clothes, cooler and a jug for after hours libation.
Staying at the Oxford suites Pismo Beach if anyone else is staying there. I'll be the guy with the nondescript rental car.

FWIW, I used that same FSI ignition on my 29 and it worked great. Didn't seem to be an issue for the guy who bought the car and raced it at Pendine sands.

Well at least you didn't say it made you "dizzy". Though I guess it would have at least been correct usage of the word in this case... :p
