Gonna start the chop on my 54 4 door bel air this weekend, I have done a ton of research on chopping a 54 but everything have been 2 doors, I know everything moves forward with the chop so I'm trying to figure out the best and easiest way to handle the back doors, does anyone have any in progress pictures of doing the back doors or maybe a build thread that I just haven't been able to find? I'm taking 5in out of the front and then whatever looks good in the back, I'm guessing 6 or 7. I'm also using a early chevy rear window so I won't have to deal with the goofy rounded rear window. Any help would be greatly appreciated
That's an old pictures lol, it's got 55 plymouth tail lights on it now, 57 chevy front bumper and 59 T bird interior
best to use original front & rear glass by lowering into body with c-channel lined with rubber sealer - keep original roof metal around glass - can lay the rear glass forward to blend to body shape
I don't like the look of the rear glass when they are chopped, it end up not looking right 95% of the time.... especially with the amount I'm taking out
49 Merc 4 door chop http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/index.php?threads/49-Merc-4-door-chop.867168/ You might get some info from this treat.. Good luck! Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If you need a hand I'll come do what I can to help. I would like to see this done in real life as I have some chopping to do myself at some point. I'm local to Dallas. I've got a 52 4door I'm going to graft with a 50 sedan delivery. Let me know if you need an extra set of eyes and hands!
To help with the back door issues you'd be doing yourself a big favor to fine another roof off another 4 door to help and minimize your metal work. Get the door tops while your at it. With an extra roof you no need to change the angle of B or Post or lay the windshield back. If your 1/2 Smart about it you would only need to cut the bottom edge of windshield glass, not 3 sides of it. The Wizzard
A great looking 1954, just the way it is ! If this thread gets over to the folks at VCCA, they'll probably come to your house and steal your '54 out of your driveway, yelling outloud "we've saved another one ! "
I think we have it worked out, we basically treated the c pillar like you would a b pillars if you where not slanting it. It went waaaaaaaay smoother than I thought it would
It would be cool if you could make it a 4 door hardtop, (looks cool in the pic). Already got a windshield plan?
A 4 door hardtop would be cool. Use 54-56 Buick or Olds roof for rear window and C pillar ideas and maybe parts.
Still have a ton to do but now bad for 3 guys who have never done a chop in 1 weekend. It does look cool as a hard top but I had my hands full already maybe on the next one lol
