Send me the check. When it clears, I'll oblige.

I'm at a loss to understand what the issue is with how I paint my chassis? I'm using a brush and it's coming out great. I honestly don't see a problem. You know, I bet if that paint could talk, it wouldn't know if it went on with a spray gun or a brush.

If I had written that I had sprayed it, would it have changed your opinion? Not that it would matter to me, but...... just asking.

  2. I like to use a brush on some (Many) thinks as on a hollow or a place that is hard to get into it tends to blow back and not get a good coverage. Im doing both on my T and the only spraying will be from a rattle can. Carry one. JW

  3. Fred, it is about doing the best work you can do and I know you can do better. Coachwork was brush painted and they did killer work. After your first bucket I just hoped for more from you. Not mad, pissed or sad. Just looking for the next level. If you are happy with what you are doing, fine.

My initial response to your comment was actually confusing. In fact, it still is. Maybe you don't know me as well as you think you do. Tman, if this hadn't turned out as I'd wanted, I would have stripped it down and went another route. I came up with a solution with consideration for my working environment and it worked. In fact, it worked so well, I'm tempted to redo my suspension pieces. There's an old thread I dug up on the HAMB about using Rustoleum. That thread was part of my research for my paint options.

About 10 minutes ago, I went down to check the finish. It's dry to the touch and looks fantastic. My results are just like all the folks in that thread said. In about a hour or so, I'm going to wire brush the frame (remember, I like working at night). Tonight's music of choice will be some jazz or blues. I haven't decided yet. If I get in a groove, I may even prime the frame tonight, as well.

Your comment, "Strive for better", fits this build very well because that's what I'm doing and that's where I'm at. The photos don't do the finish justice. My plans for this build are awesome. It won't be "traditional". It'll be better than my last and on a whole new level for me. If you could see it in person, I'm positive you'd agree. This build is going to be so much better than my last, that when it's done, you won't even remember "Miss Behavin' " (the name of my last T Bucket).

As for "expecting more", if you're going to judge, judge the final product, not the procedure.

And people wonder why I didn't do a build thread on the HAMB? I don't need the distraction.

Painting with a brush is "traditional" beside the fact you are doing it, not the guys giving you a hard time.

Well, that was relaxing. I did the bottom and sides first. When it's dry enough to handle, I'll flip her and finish her up.

I'm with you on jazz " Take five" Ramisy Luise Trio. (spelling)

  10. "Take Five" was done by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, not Ramsey Lewis. ;)

Fred -- I brushed Nason Chassis Black on my chassis, and I'm quite happy with the results. :) In my opinion, spraying paint on the chassis wouldn't make it any "better," as it's a home-built traditional Hot Rod, not a show car. Keep on keepin' on!

  11. So Fred, since you are in a humid area are you using Japan Drier?

No, I'm not. The humidity has been a little lower than usual, but I'm following the instructions and waiting the 24 hours for full dry time.

Got up this morning, flipped her over and finished priming. HEY! No runs!:) My land lord was shop cleaning today, so I got moved into a new spot. No worries. I just wish he would have done this a month ago.

Instructions or not and regardless of the dry time I would be using a hardener mostly for a perceived finish durability standpoint.
On my chassis I will be using the same paint as on the body, SS acrylic urethane so it will be catalyzed also.

  15. Yes, I prefer a hardened paint as well. Japan Drier will do that. I am also fond of the SS Urethanes. My touring was painted with Industrial SS. Think it was $45/gal ;)

I put on my thinking cap and came up with a way to paint the top and underside of my frame without having to keep flipping it. A quick trip to the hardware store and I purchased 4 8" bolts, which I'll run through the shock mounts on each corner. Then, I can rest the assembly on 4 jack stands. I'll have to lay down to get underneath, but it's better than flipping the frame over.

I spent this last summer's car shows teaching my teenage son about Ackerman angle and how many buckets and rr's don't know about it.

  20. Fred get 3 saw horses. You can point 2 long bolts backwards off the shock mounts and then mount 1 bolt forwards from the spring perch. It will get it higher than jackstands and you can spin it like a rotisserie. Here is a shot of mine using engine stands but I have also done the same with sawhorses.

The jack stands worked fine. Got in from work and went after it like a kid in a candy store. A couple runs, but no big deal. You know the drill. Razor blade.... 1,000 grit and done. I'll let this set over night and do the second coat tomorrow.

I'm a man of limited means. I'm saving up for the body now. It's going to be a while, but it's a CCR stretched body and well worth the wait.

I finished the second coat on the frame a while ago and it came out great. Next step...... a pair of coil overs to complete the rear end.

  27. Coil overs? I thought you were building a "traditional" Hot Rod. ;)

In my humble opinion, if a kid from the 50's, was here today, he'd be running radials, disc brakes and a SBC, in his Hot Rod. I really like traditional builds, but they're not for me.
